The Second Cataclysm was the final major conflict in the Korinthian Remnant Civil War. The northern forces rallied under the banner of a polemarch of Antioch, Theophilus. The northern army marched on Heliopolis, the capital of Southern Korinth. Aided by many of those who would become the Cardinal Deities, Theophilus had won several clear victories on his march southward. In turn, Atticus, magistrate of Heliopolis and strategos of the southern forces, had lost a third of his men in one month.
In desperation to stop Theophilus and his divine attaches, Atticus, and his advisors began to petition the deities that had not declared a stake in the conflict. Their petitions were met with relative success but at great costs. Gods of chaos and even the evil dragon queen, Tiamat, answered their call in exchange for Atticus' soul.

When the two forces finally met, the gods on either side broke forth in a raging cacophony of divine firepower. Their warfare was so catastrophic that most of the Korinthian troops on either side died before most of the battle was had. The battle concluded in a final duel between Ares and his champion Theophilus vs Atticus atop Tiamat in her dragon form. Their conflict caused much of the land on the southern Korinthian coast to become entirely uninhabitable. In addition, Atticus was felled by Ares, and Heliopolis was reduced to ruin. The most grievous consequence, however, was the separation of Heliopolis and its surrounding territory from the mainland.
This tectonic shift caused a nearly impassable mountain range to arise on the southern coast of Korinth and destroyed all surrounding wildlife. The span of the ocean that now exists between the mainland and Heliopolis is referred to as “The Great Gap.” Many soldiers who were still living drowned in the Gap or died in the earthquake. As a result, the two factions agreed to a reluctant truce that graduated to a peace treaty following the decimation of their armies. Many south-eastern Korinthians, however, declared independence following the calamity.
