Iron Maw

Type

Mercenary guild and illicit delving network

Focus

Blood contracts, forced core extraction, and frontier recruitment

Operating Area

Imperion, with operations across western Pallasia

Leadership

Hidden command; Serka coordinates the western frontier

Headquarters

Central headquarters unconfirmed; operations use warehouses, drop points, and temporary recruiting sites

The Iron Maw takes mercenary work that other guilds refuse: brutal raids, coercion, and hunts against its clients' enemies. Its crews are known for ruthlessness and for abandoning agreements when a better offer arrives.

On the western frontier, the Maw also profits from dungeon cores. Operatives force extractions, move cracked cores through fences, and disguise their origins with forged documents. Recruitment and shipping pass through ordinary taverns and merchant businesses, allowing parts of the operation to continue without openly declaring Iron Maw membership.

Earn money through violent contracts and the sale of dungeon material.
Maintain a network that can recruit crews, supply extraction equipment, and bring cores to market outside Guild Accord supervision.

The frontier network divides work between handlers, field crews, fences, and transport businesses. Serka coordinates recruitment and logistics, but reports to an unnamed superior through drop points. The fence Rodrik Halvard knew the codes needed for his own work; he did not know the full command structure.

Some participants are committed Iron Maw operatives. Others take a wage or a profitable shipping contract without knowing the broader operation. That distinction matters when a site is exposed: a merchant's cooperation, a captured archer, and a handler's testimony would each reveal different parts of the network.

Command — Gives instructions through intermediaries. Its members' identities remain unknown.
Handlers — Serka recruits workers, identifies dungeon sites, and coordinates shipments and field operations.
Field crews and enforcers — Carry out extractions, protect cargo, and intimidate or remove obstacles. Serka's muscle, Bryce “Tinker” Corwen, is personally loyal to her.
Fences and transport contacts — Repackage cores, forge provenance, and move equipment. Rodrik handled the Loereth fence; Orelius Tann handles Corinthian shipments.

Mercenary work — Raids, pursuit, and violent jobs performed for paying clients.
Core trade — Sell damaged cores under false provenance, including the Thornpeak Syndicate front used in Loereth.
Equipment supply — Ship void-tuned resonators, forced-extraction tools, and alchemical stabilizers west as “mining equipment.”
Recruitment and surveys — Hire frontier prospectors and map dungeon manifestations. Serka used the Broken Antler in Marcos as a recruiting site.
Dungeon experiments — The Corinthia crew held a Rothive and planned to release it into a dungeon to observe its effects. The Untamed Concord destroyed it before that release.

Continue the western operation despite the loss of the Loereth fence and exposure in Marcos.
Protect the remaining shipment routes, personnel, and dungeon sites from investigation.

The Maw recruits for useful skills and access: fighters, prospectors, assessors, fences, and people who can move cargo. Serka, a former Guild Accord assessor, argues that its methods achieve results faster than Guild procedure. Her conviction does not make the damaged cores or the civilian cost disappear.

Loyalty varies. Tinker follows Serka personally. Rodrik feared his handlers. Tann accepted unusually profitable shipments and avoided questions about their contents. The network can employ all three without offering them the same knowledge or authority.

Frontier workers are approached through personal offers and retainers. Serka sought local prospectors in Marcos.
Transport contacts can enter through apparently ordinary commercial contracts, with sensitive cargo and unusually high payment.

Paid contracts and access to work outside the Accord's approved assignments.
Equipment and shipping support through the frontier network.
Tann's contract paid triple the normal freight rate in return for moving unmarked crates without questions.

Follow the handler's instructions and the network's codes for personnel, cargo, and locations.
Protect the shipment trail and report compromised contacts. The cipher directs personnel to burn evidence and use a backup location when a site is compromised.
Report sightings of Hask, a former associate now hunting Iron Maw fences.

Serka — Frontier handler and former Guild Accord assessor. She fled west from Marcos and remains active.
Bryce “Tinker” Corwen — An awakened bear who serves as Serka's muscle. He escaped the party's confrontation in Marcos; his current whereabouts are uncertain.
Rodrik Halvard — Former assessor and Loereth fence, handed to the Guild with documentation after the warehouse investigation. His personal cipher exposed much of the shipping network.
Orelius Tann — Corinthian import/export merchant whose business carries the western shipments. The warehouse raid implicated him; his arrest remains unresolved.
Hask — Former Iron Maw associate who now hunts its fences.

Guild Accord — Investigates damaged cores and unlicensed operations. Petra Ashworth and Lydia Crane have received evidence from the Untamed Concord.
Untamed Concord — Exposed the Loereth fence and Marcos operation, then infiltrated Tann's warehouse on Commander Drusa's behalf.
Corinthia garrison — Commander Valeria Drusa is pursuing the supply line. Councilor Vesna Holt has blocked warrants as a favor to Tann, without knowing what his cargo supports.

The network uses legitimate trade businesses, lead-lined crates, dampening fabric, stabilizers, forged provenance stamps, and coded correspondence. Rodrik's Thornpeak paperwork gave damaged cores a plausible origin. Tann's ordinary shipping business sent extraction equipment in the other direction.

The seized cipher contains emergency procedures and references to backup sites. It also leaves gaps: “Bloom,” “Phase Two,” the mountain operation, and the extracted “asset” were beyond Rodrik's knowledge.

Altoria — A recruiting office appears in Rodrik's cipher; its location is only given as the Veins district.
Loereth — Rodrik's warehouse and a secondary drop point.
Marcos — The Broken Antler recruiting site.
Corinthia — Tann's warehouses on Merchant's Row.
Kwehn'raa Aerie — Marked in the operation's records; the meaning of the extracted “asset” remains unresolved.

Recent History

The Untamed Concord brought Rodrik and his documents to the Guild after the Loereth investigation. In Marcos, the party obtained further evidence while Serka and Tinker escaped. At Corinthia, the Concord entered Tann's warehouse using Iron Maw disguises and a token. It discovered the captive Rothive and overheard the proposed dungeon release.

The ensuing fight killed an Iron Maw enforcer through his own archer's friendly fire. The archer was captured and the Rothive destroyed. The city guards arrived at the end of the encounter. The evidence has yet to be formally presented. Tann's arrest and Holt's response remain unresolved.
