However, the rise of the Elder Fathom in the mid-Second Age rendered this idealistic approach obsolete. The seas were no longer merely unknown; they became actively hostile and sentient. Treaties could not bind the U'lythia, and diplomacy was useless against the Fathom's maddening song. The Viatum was forced to adapt or perish. The most successful Viatarchs began militarizing their expeditions, hiring mercenaries, and seeking out forbidden knowledge to navigate the now-treacherous waters. In doing so, they accrued immense personal wealth and power, evolving from simple envoys into formidable commanders. The Viatum as a formal body dissolved, its purpose outpaced by the grim necessities of the era, but its most powerful scions became the first Lord Factors.
