Udelund is a vast and magically sculpted land, shaped by draconic power to house every possible biome suited to dragonkind. Towering volcanic peaks spew embers into darkened skies, while ancient jungles sprawl with untamed wilderness. Frozen tundras shimmer beneath the northern lights, golden deserts stretch into eternity, and floating islands drift high above, tethered by ley lines of pure magic. The land itself pulses with arcane energy, sustaining the immense power of its dragon rulers.

Once an unchallenged empire of dragon supremacy, Udelund now teeters on the edge of civil war. The Red Dragons of the Elder Coil seek to entrench their dominance by elevating their Underworld allies to the ruling council, while the Blue Dragons of the Dissidents fight to reshape the realm into one of diplomacy and peace. Caught in the middle, neutral factions and enslaved dragonborn struggle to survive as battle lines are drawn and the skies burn with war.

Government

The Council of Udelund was once the supreme ruling body of dragonkind, but it now stands divided as the realm plunges into civil war.

  • The Elder Coil, led by the Red dragons, seek to uphold draconic hierarchy and secure power by elevating the Underworld dragons to the Ruling Council. They believe dragonkind must remain aloof from the world, ruling as supreme beings from the shadows.

  • The Dissidents, led by the Blue dragons, fight for radical change, seeking to raise their own kind to the Council and forge peace with the world beyond Udelund. They view the Elder Coil as tyrants preserving a broken system.

  • The Copper dragons remain neutral, unwilling to back either side, preferring to maintain their own territories and avoid the chaos of war.

A Short History

For the first two centuries of recorded history, humans were nothing more than prey, hunted by dragons for food and sport. The vast, open landscapes of Gyte offered little refuge from the relentless aerial raids, and human clans lived in constant terror, their survival dependent on hiding in caves and moving under the cover of night. The Cysenth Channel, the narrow sea separating Gyte from Udelund, became a battleground, as dragon flights swept across the waters, descending upon the highland settlements like living storms.

In 240, everything changed. In search of sanctuary, human longships braved the Felonas Strait and discovered a new land—The Steppes of Galeaha. Unlike Gyte, Galeaha’s fjords, highlands, and foggy environment created a natural defense, making it difficult for dragons to navigate and hunt effectively. For the first time in history, humans held the upper hand. With their fortified settlements built into sheer cliffs, and their warriors using the terrain to their advantage, they transformed from hunted to defenders, pushing back against the once-unstoppable predators.

Recognizing that their traditional methods of domination and fear were failing, the dragons devised a new solution. The first Dragonborn were then created—humanoid offspring infused with draconic power, meant to act as envoys and mediators between dragonkind and humanity. These new beings carried the strength of their creators but the adaptability of humans, and the dragons hoped they would broker peace where fear and fire had failed. However, humanity would not forget centuries of slaughter.

When the first Dragonborn delegation arrived in The Steppes of Galeaha, they were welcomed into a great hall, supposedly for a feast. Instead, three of the five envoys were executed, their corpses left as a warning, while the remaining two barely escaped with their lives. The act sent shockwaves through both sides. For dragons, it was a final insult, a betrayal that would never be forgiven. For humans, it was a preemptive strike against a perceived deception. The Great Dragon Wars erupted immediately, plunging both civilizations into 700 years of bloodshed.

Between 240 and 930, Gyte and the surrounding northern seas became a war zone. Dragon raids devastated coastal settlements, while human longships and archers struck back, using fire, poisoned weapons, and sheer determination to resist. The Dragonborn were caught between both worlds, often serving as warriors, spies, or unwilling pawns. Neither side could achieve total victory—humans thrived in the hidden reaches of Galeaha, while dragons remained an unbreakable force in Udelund. This long and bitter conflict forced both sides to abandon expansion southward, locking them in a centuries-long stalemate.

By 930 VAC, exhaustion and necessity brought an end to the war. The humans and Dragonborn reached a fragile peace, learning to coexist despite lingering tensions. The dragons, meanwhile, retreated to Udelund, turning their focus inward. To prevent further internal conflict, they established the Council of Udelund, a ruling body that kept dragonkind in balance through structured governance. The Upper and Lower Houses were formed, ensuring no single dragon lineage could claim absolute power over the realm. For centuries, this system held firm—until the abandonment of the Gold Throne shattered its stability.

Now, the peace that Udelund has known is at risk once more. The Red Dragons of the Elder Coil seek to tighten their grip on power, elevating the Underworld Dragons to the ruling council and ensuring that dragonkind remains isolated and supreme. In opposition, the Blue Dragons of the Dissidents rally for change, calling for the end of isolation and a new future where Udelund engages with the world. With civil war brewing, the echoes of the past grow louder. As the skies darken with fire and wings once more, history threatens to repeat itself.
