After a successful hunt and a delicious meal on the road to Phandalin, the party settled in for a long rest. During her watch, Clara, with the help of her newly summoned owl familiar, Archie, spotted a mysterious chest sitting by the road about a mile ahead. Deciding to deal with it in the morning, the party finished their rest undisturbed and awoke refreshed.
Upon reaching the chest, Clara used a spectral hand to try and open it from a safe distance. The chest began to shake and transformed into a monstrous creature with a long, lashing tongue. The mimic immediately attacked, grappling Erik and dealing him a severe blow. The party rallied, with Bjorn transforming into a bear and Nissa firing arrows. The creature was formidable, but through their combined efforts, including a fiery strike from Nissa, they defeated the monster.
After the mimic was slain, it reverted to a chest, but its interior was a void of pure darkness. Curious, the party began to reach inside. Archie, the owl, was the first to retrieve something, pulling out a magical amulet and a powerful great axe for Bjorn. One by one, the others reached into the void, pulling out an assortment of treasures including healing ointments, spell scrolls, a glowing orb, a wand for detecting secrets, and a potion that could turn one into a misty cloud. It was a strange and bountiful reward for their perilous discovery.
Continuing their journey, the group heard a commotion in the nearby woods. Archie scouted ahead and discovered a camp of Cragmaw goblins. Hoping to gain an advantage, Breith created an illusion of a human baby crawling into the camp, but the goblins were not fooled. A battle erupted, with Nissa raining down a shower of thorns and Clara unleashing a wave of thunderous force that decimated several goblins. The party fought fiercely, eventually cornering the goblin boss and one of his subordinates.
With the goblin boss and another goblin captured, the party began an interrogation. The boss, initially defiant and terrified of his leader, King Grol, eventually broke under intimidation. He revealed that Cragmaw Castle was located to the north, where about twenty goblins served King Grol. He also confirmed the dwarf Gundren was being held prisoner there, but claimed to know nothing about the mysterious figure known as 'the Spider'. Deciding he was of no further use, Breith executed the boss. The other goblin was fed to Bjorn's dire wolf, Avalanche. Having gathered the information they needed, the party continued their journey and arrived safely in Phandalin before evening.
