Session Overview
The party continued its exploration of Wave Echo Cave through a series of dangerous encounters before reaching the legendary Forge of Spells. Bugbears crowded the narrow passages, undead threatened the adventurers’ vitality, and the cavern’s volatile magic complicated their spellcasting.
Beyond those battles, the party discovered a scorched workshop illuminated by an eerie green flame. Inside waited Neznar the Spider, someone wearing Sildar Hallwinter’s appearance, and a dangerous aberration. The supposed Sildar was revealed as a doppelganger, while the Star of Dumathoin appeared to be connected to the forge’s growing instability.
The session ended during the confrontation, with the chamber shaking and rubble rising around the increasingly unstable forge.
Bugbears in the Cavern
Play resumed amid a bugbear encounter. Before returning to the action, the group clarified Erik’s fighter abilities, including Tactical Mind, Champion features, and Sentinel.
The party used readied attacks and coordinated positioning to meet bugbears approaching Jasper. Weapon attacks, Savage Attacker, and graze damage helped maintain pressure in the cramped battlefield.
An attempt to put three bugbears to sleep failed. The encounter also triggered a volatile-magic surge that left Sleep unavailable to its caster for four days. The incident reinforced that the lingering magic within the cave could make even familiar spells unpredictable.
The Driftglobe was activated to illuminate the battlefield. Light placement, visibility, and the positions of allies and enemies became important as the fighting spread through the cavern.
Bjorn’s Immovable Rod
Bjorn used the rod of immovability to pin two bugbears against opposing cavern walls. The maneuver restrained them and dealt substantial damage, giving the party an opportunity to concentrate attacks on enemies unable to move freely.
Jasper’s position in the passage added another obstacle. Between the pinned bugbears, the rod, and their companion, the adventurers turned the narrow terrain into an advantage.
The maneuver also produced some of the evening’s lighter moments as the table imagined the bugbears struggling around the rod.
Undead in the Darkness
The fighting extended into a darkened passage occupied by a wraith and a specter. The party relied on illumination and radiant attacks while working through the creatures’ reactions to light.
Brieth used radiant magic and Spiritual Weapon. Fear, restricted movement, and the boundaries between light and darkness complicated the party’s positioning. Undead attacks also reduced Brieth’s maximum hit points, making the encounter especially dangerous.
The group discussed Sunlight Sensitivity and how to apply the Driftglobe’s effect during the encounter. Through careful positioning and sustained attacks, the party continued its advance.
A Short Rest and Another Ambush
After a short rest, the adventurers faced imps and a revenant near the entrance to another chamber.
The revenant used Vengeful Glare and powerful physical attacks, while the imps threatened the party from several directions. Fear effects and uncertain lines of sight made coordination difficult.
The party answered with melee attacks, spells, Hunter’s Mark, and Dread Ambusher. Jasper continued to help by biting enemies, occupying useful positions, and supporting the party’s attacks.
The fighting placed further pressure on the group’s resources before their exploration brought them to the Forge of Spells.
The Forge of Spells
The workshop bore the scars of an ancient magical battle. Burned masonry and scorched worktables surrounded a stone pedestal bearing a brazier of eerie green flame. The brazier stood out against the destruction around it.
The party initially saw someone who appeared to be Sildar Hallwinter. His expression and behavior made the encounter unsettling. A drow in the room introduced himself as Neznar the Spider, while another presence suggested that the chamber held more than an uneasy meeting.
The adventurers identified the forge and the Star of Dumathoin, the relic tied to Clara’s long-running research. Their examination suggested that the gem was not properly seated and that the forge was unstable.
The group considered whether the Star should be adjusted or removed, and whether the forge needed to be shut down. Neznar appeared to understand something of the danger, but his motives remained uncertain. His fear of the creature in the room suggested that events were slipping beyond his control.
False Faces and Eye Rays
The figure appearing as Sildar was revealed to be a doppelganger. The strange aberration was identified during play as a spectator.
The confrontation escalated into combat. The spectator attacked with eye rays and psychic effects, while the doppelganger became an active threat. A legendary action from the creature added to the party’s alarm.
The adventurers responded with ranged attacks, spells, and attempts to control the cramped battlefield. Magic Missile, Ray of Frost, and Guiding Bolt featured in the confrontation. The group also considered closing the door to contain the danger and used Jasper’s positioning to help manage enemy movement.
An attempted love-potion tactic added a moment of improvisation amid the crisis. Negotiation, attacks, and efforts to understand the forge overlapped as the room became increasingly unstable.
The Cliffhanger
The chamber began shaking, and rubble rose around the forge.
The party remained caught in an unresolved confrontation with the spectator, the doppelganger, and Neznar. The Star of Dumathoin’s placement and the forge’s instability had become immediate concerns, but the adventurers had not yet settled on a safe course of action.
The session ended before the battle or the magical crisis was resolved.

Jasper: Helped hold narrow passages, blocked movement, and supported attacks throughout several encounters.
Arcane investigation: The party identified the forge, examined the Star of Dumathoin, and recognized that the gem’s placement was connected to the danger.
Coordinated tactics: Readied attacks, light placement, restrained enemies, and careful positioning were recurring tools throughout the session.
