Session 13 - Possession Free

The adventurers found themselves facing a lone ogre zombie, which they quickly dispatched. Their relief was short-lived as a monstrous, insect-like creature, an umber hulk, erupted from the floor. A fierce battle followed, with the creature's tough hide deflecting many blows. During the fight, Erik was showered with illusionary gold coins after a surge of wild magic, and Clara found herself mysteriously immune to opportunity attacks. After a grueling struggle, the party finally brought the beast down, with Nissa claiming one of its teeth as a trophy.

After the fight, the party explored an adjacent chamber that once served as an office. Amidst crumbling papers and the remains of long-dead dwarves, Erik discovered a locked strongbox. Brieth skillfully picked the lock, revealing a cache of gold, electrum, silver, and copper coins, which they added to their dwindling funds. Deciding it was a safe place, they took a short rest. However, their respite was interrupted when Erik sensed a cold presence on the other side of the door. Opening it, they were confronted by several spectral figures.

The party engaged the ghosts, which proved to be elusive foes, capable of passing through walls. The adventurers fought hard, eventually vanquishing the spirits and completing their rest. Pressing onward, they entered a massive cavern with a ceiling that glittered like a starry night, filled with the skeletons of fallen dwarves. The cavern contained two freestanding stone structures. As they explored, they moved into a large chamber filled with a dense carpet of bizarre fungi, some glowing with an eerie green light. Among the fungi, they noticed skeletons, including one that seemed to be animated by a parasitic growth.

As they ventured deeper into the mushroom cavern, several of the fungi began to shift and move, revealing themselves to be Myconids. A large, sentient mushroom communicated with them telepathically, speaking in one-word sentences: "feed," "protect," "mystery." The friendly Myconids began attacking other, more sinister-looking violet fungi. The party joined the fray, helping the Myconids destroy the violet fungi. After the battle, the large mushroom returned to its inanimate state. The party harvested what they could from the defeated fungi and continued on.

They approached one of the stone structures in the large cavern. Bjorn, with characteristic bravado, kicked the doors in. Inside, they found a destroyed room and a floating, skeletal figure in wizard's robes—a wraith. The wraith, enraged by their intrusion, summoned specters throughout the cavern. A desperate battle for survival began. The party struggled against the undead, who could drain their life force and resist many of their attacks. Clara managed to turn several of the undead, causing them to flee in terror. The fight was intense, with many close calls, including a ghost attempting to possess Clara. After a long and draining battle, they managed to defeat all but the main wraith and one specter, both of whom were temporarily frightened away. The party was left battered and depleted, debating whether to flee or press the attack.
