After some discussion about their moral alignments, with Erik and Clara both committing to a path of lawful good, the party set out for Cragmaw Castle. They traveled for a day, making camp just short of their destination. During his watch, Erik prayed to his god, Torm, and felt a divine response, a boon that would aid him in the coming battle. The following morning, they arrived at the dilapidated fortress.
Clara recalled the history of the stronghold, once known as Castle Veyr, a bastion of protection that fell to raiders over a century ago. To scout the area, the party sent Archie the owl, who confirmed the castle was in shambles but occupied. Archie identified the main entrance and a side door, but no other easy points of entry. As the adventurers approached, goblins stationed in arrow slits spotted them and scrambled to their positions, forcing the party to act quickly.
The group split up, with Bjorn and Breith charging the southern tower while Erik and Clara headed for the northern one. Arrows flew from the slits as the party rushed the entrance. Bjorn kicked open the door to the southern tower, revealing a room full of sleeping goblins who were just beginning to stir. A fierce battle erupted, with Bjorn cleaving through goblins as Clara used her magic to blind their attackers. Nissa provided support from the entrance, using her bow to pick off enemies. The party methodically cleared both towers of the goblin guards.
After clearing the entrance towers, Bjorn discovered a crumbled wall leading into what was once the castle's banquet hall. The room was a mess of old food and bones, with several goblins milling about under the command of a tougher-looking leader. The party engaged them, with Erik unleashing a flash of divine light that seared many of the creatures. Bjorn, enraged after being caught in a rubble trap, charged in and brutally dispatched the goblin boss by smashing him against a wall. After the fight, the party took time to harvest what they could from the fallen goblins.
Continuing their exploration, the party found a locked door. Breith picked the lock, revealing a workshop where a rock gnome named Fizzwick Fluxweaver was chained to a table. He was terrified, explaining that King Groll had imprisoned him, believing he could craft magic items. The party freed him, and he scurried away through a hidden passage. The noise attracted the attention of four hobgoblins who emerged from another room. The party quickly dispatched them, though Nissa was badly wounded in the exchange before being healed by Clara.
After another brief rest, the group proceeded cautiously. Bjorn, impatient, tried and failed to kick down a sturdy, locked door. When Breith tried to pick the lock, Bjorn decided to simply open an unlocked door nearby, revealing the throne room. Inside, the mighty bugbear King Groll loomed over an unconscious dwarf, Gundren Rockseeker. With Groll were a snarling wolf, the wizard Glasstaff, and a mysterious drow woman who quickly vanished, warning Groll to handle the intruders.
A tense negotiation began. King Groll held a knife to Gundren's throat. The party offered Groll and his wolf safe passage in exchange for Gundren and Glasstaff. Groll agreed. As the bugbear and wolf began to retreat, Glasstaff attacked Clara with fiery rays before she retaliated with a blast of her own. Nissa leaped over the wolf to confront Glasstaff directly, striking him down with a divinely empowered blow. True to their word, the party allowed King Groll and his wolf to depart, and they dropped the unconscious Gundren at the door.
The party revived Gundren, who confirmed the drow woman was the Spider and that she now likely had his map to Wave Echo Cave. He urged them to hurry there. Before leaving, they searched Glasstaff's body, finding his staff and a key. They also found notes Groll had been taking on the Forge of Spells. Using the key, they opened the last locked door, revealing a ruined tower. As they entered, they were ambushed by strange, brain-like creatures with tentacles that floated down from the shadowy ceiling above.
