The Lyrandar Airship

The elemental airship is the most advanced vehicle on Eberron — the pride of House Lyrandar and, in the eyes of many, the forerunner of a new age of magical engineering. Where the lightning rail is a feat of infrastructure, the airship is a feat of craft: a vessel that defies gravity entirely, propelled through open sky by a bound elemental and the will of its dragonmarked pilot. For most of Khorvaire's population, seeing an airship overhead still provokes a moment of awe. They are that new, and that rare.


History and Current State

The first airships emerged from workshops jointly operated by House Cannith and the gnome artificers of Zilargo, entering House Lyrandar's service in 990 YK — barely a decade ago by the current reckoning. They are, even now, a recent innovation, and the demand for them vastly outstrips the supply. The reason is not arcane knowledge or funding: it is soarwood.

Soarwood is the hull material that makes an airship possible. It is a form of buoyant timber found exclusively on the island of Aerenal, and the elves who inhabit that island strictly limit how much of it they harvest each year. The trickle of soarwood that reaches Khorvaire's workshops is the bottleneck through which every airship must pass, and production proceeds at a pace that frustrates everyone who wants a vessel. The discovery of a new soarwood supply — or the negotiation of a more favorable harvest agreement with the Aereni — would be transformative for House Lyrandar's ambitions and for Khorvaire's transportation economy.

It was only in 994 YK, just four years before the current date, that House Lyrandar reluctantly produced a small number of military airships — called stormships — for deployment in the Last War. The house had been unwilling to commit vessels that valuable to purely military service. Today, with the war ended, Lyrandar airships are once again primarily commercial and passenger vessels, though the question of their military potential has not been forgotten by anyone who watched them fly.


How It Works

Soarwood Hull and Lift

Unlike any flying creature or conventional aircraft, an airship does not rely on aerodynamic lift. The buoyancy of the vessel comes entirely from its soarwood hull. Soarwood is inherently lighter than air, and a hull built from it will remain aloft whether the elemental is active or not. When the bound elemental is suppressed, an airship does not fall — it simply floats, inert, unable to move under its own power. This distinction is critical for safe docking and emergency operations.

Because lift is structural rather than elemental, airships can orient themselves in ways that would destroy a winged vessel. A skilled pilot can fly the ship on its side or even inverted, though the practical consequences for passengers and unsecured cargo are severe.

The Elemental Matrix and Dragonshard Binding

Like all elemental vessels, the airship is built around an invisible arcane matrix inlaid into its hull during construction. This matrix extends from a central containment chamber through the binding struts and throughout the hull. When a Khyber dragonshard housing a bound elemental is placed in the containment chamber, the matrix activates. The elemental flows along it — as blood moves through arteries — concentrating at the binding struts into the ring of energy that encircles the vessel.

Two types of dragonshards are required. A Khyber dragonshard of the largest size and finest quality binds and contains the elemental itself; a Siberys dragonshard is required to craft the vessel's helm. Eberron dragonshard dust maintains the enchantments on an ongoing basis and must be continuously supplied to keep the vessel operational. Without a reliable source of all three, construction and upkeep of new airships cannot proceed.

Construction is not a solitary undertaking. Building a new elemental vessel occupies a full workshop for months, requires teams of skilled magewrights and arcane engineers, and depends on rare materials sourced from across the world. The binding techniques themselves — developed originally by gnome artificers in Zilargo through study of ancient Sul'at League devices — are closely guarded and vary between workshops.

The Bound Elemental: Air or Fire

An airship's bound elemental is either an air elemental or a fire elemental, held within the Khyber dragonshard and channeled through the vessel's matrix. The elemental manifests as a ring encircling the hull, held in that shape by four binding struts that jut outward from the vessel's sides. The visual character of this ring reflects the elemental's nature: an air elemental produces a crackling, shimmering corona, while a fire elemental wraps the ship in a continuous band of flame.

The elemental provides all propulsion. It is not a simple mechanism but a living entity in a state of arcane binding, responsive to the pilot's commands and capable of executing maneuvers beyond what any conventional engine could manage. A skilled pilot who has trained extensively with an elemental can coax acrobatic flight from the vessel. Without a pilot in active command, however, the elemental will move according to its own disposition until control is reasserted.

A character without a dragonmark who attempts to command the elemental directly must touch either the Khyber dragonshard in the containment chamber or the vessel's helm and succeed on a DC 20 Charisma check to gain one minute of cooperation. The dominate monster spell can compel full obedience and can even override a dragonmarked pilot's commands. Charm monster makes the elemental compliant but does not override an active dragonmarked pilot at the helm.

The Wheel of Wind and Water

The helm of a Lyrandar airship is a Wheel of Wind and Water: an ornately carved wooden wheel mounted in the wheelhouse near the rear of the vessel. A character who bears the Mark of Storm and grips this wheel establishes a telepathic link with the bound elemental, commanding the vessel's movement directly through that link. The wheel is a Siberys dragonshard focus item, and only a dragonmarked heir of House Lyrandar with the Mark of Storm can use it to fly the ship.

Without a dragonmarked hand on the wheel, the vessel loses directed propulsion. The soarwood hull keeps it aloft, but it drifts.


Anatomy of an Airship

A Lyrandar airship resembles an oceangoing ship in its broad form, but rigged with control fins and rudders rather than sails. The hull is soarwood throughout. Four binding struts extend from the hull's sides, suspending the elemental ring well clear of the vessel's body. Most airships are fitted with the finest amenities and decorative flourishes, reflecting both the high cost of passage and the house's interest in projecting prestige.

Hull. Soarwood throughout, providing inherent buoyancy. The hull is also the medium through which the elemental matrix runs, visible during flight as lines of pulsing elemental energy tracing the grain of the wood.

Binding Struts. Four struts protrude from the hull, each extending approximately ten feet outward, holding the elemental ring in its circular formation around the vessel. These struts are the reason an airship cannot land: they protrude ten feet below the hull's lowest point, preventing any ground contact. An airship must dock at a tower or float at elevation.

Wheelhouse. Located near the rear of the vessel and enclosed for shelter, the wheelhouse contains the Wheel of Wind and Water and serves as the pilot's station. From here, the pilot maintains continuous command of the elemental during flight.

Passenger and Cargo Spaces. Most airships are outfitted with fine amenities throughout, including decorative flourishes and creature comforts in keeping with the high cost of passage. Specific internal configuration varies by vessel; no single standard layout governs the interior as strictly as the lightning rail's cart system.

Rope Ladders. Every airship carries rope ladders for use at smaller destinations without docking towers, in open terrain, or in emergency situations where tower access is unavailable.


Operation and Crew

Piloting a Lyrandar airship requires a dragonmarked heir bearing the Mark of Storm. Unlike the lightning rail, which follows a fixed conductor stone path and allows the pilot some latitude of attention, an airship in flight demands continuous active control. There are no conductor stones to provide guidance or enforce a route; the pilot must manage every aspect of the vessel's movement. For this reason, at least two pilots typically travel on every journey, allowing for rest and relief during long crossings.

House Lyrandar pilots train for months before taking the helm of a vessel, developing a detailed understanding of the ship's capabilities and limitations and learning to communicate effectively with the bound elemental. This training is what separates a competent pilot from a skilled one, and the most experienced Lyrandar pilots can execute maneuvers that seem impossible given the vessel's size.


Docking and Loading

Because the binding struts protrude ten feet below the hull, an airship cannot rest on the ground under any normal circumstances. In major cities, House Lyrandar operates docking towers tall enough to bring the vessel level with elevated platforms, where passengers and cargo are loaded via elevators and gangways. Korth, for example, completed its first airship docking tower in 993 YK; it quickly became the preferred arrival point for house business in Karrnath. Many cities, particularly smaller or more remote ones, do not yet have docking towers at all, and airship service to such destinations is either unavailable or conducted via rope ladder.

When approaching a dock, the pilot suppresses the bound elemental — causing the ring to disappear and propulsion to cease — then maneuvers the inert, floating vessel into position using ropes. This is the standard docking procedure, and it requires careful coordination between the pilot, the crew, and the dock workers.


Speed and Capacity

A typical Lyrandar airship reaches a speed of 20 miles per hour in clear skies and can carry up to 30 tons of cargo. This makes it faster than a Lyrandar elemental galleon — which moves at 10 miles per hour — and substantially faster than any overland coach or caravan, though slightly slower than the lightning rail's 30 miles per hour. The airship's advantage over the rail is its freedom from fixed routes: it can reach any destination in the world, provided the elemental holds and the pilot can navigate there.

Prototype vessels capable of significantly higher speeds exist within House Lyrandar's fleet, but travel aboard them is both more expensive and more dangerous than standard service.


Fares

Airship travel is the most expensive standard mode of transportation in Khorvaire, priced at the high end of the three-tier passenger fare structure shared with the lightning rail. The finest passage runs 5 silver pieces per mile; standard fare is 2 silver pieces per mile. The house's heirs have been known to offer half-fare or free passage to individuals of significance or those who have performed notable services — such favors are not cheap to earn, but they are among the most coveted Lyrandar can offer.


Limitations

An airship's freedom from fixed routes is its greatest advantage and the source of its greatest complexity. Without conductor stones to govern the path, every journey demands continuous active piloting by a trained dragonmarked heir. The vessel cannot land. Ports of call are limited to cities with docking towers, and the construction of new towers is proceeding slowly across Khorvaire. Soarwood scarcity means that the fleet itself grows only incrementally; House Lyrandar cannot meet demand and likely will not be able to do so for the foreseeable future unless a new source of the timber is secured.

House Lyrandar has also placed an embargo on airship deployment over Xen'drik following several disastrous expeditions. The vessels are considered too slow and too valuable to risk in that continent's unpredictable aerial environment.
