Kelmar is the living heart of the Seyrik system in the Cygnus Spur of the Sagittarius Arm and the homeworld of the Mahruni. Oceans, warm forest basins, wind-scoured steppe, mountain cities and permanent polar ice share a planet whose global average temperature is about 8 °C. Its industrial civilization governs the wider system through the Protectorate of Kelmar.

Orbit, Air and Water

The third of Seyrik's seven major planets, Kelmar orbits about 124 million kilometres from its orange K1 V star. Its local year lasts approximately 7,234 standard hours (0.82535 Cycle) and its rotation about 27 hours, giving roughly 268 rotations per orbit. A standard hour is 3,600 seconds. The 24-degree axial tilt drives substantial seasons, while modest orbital eccentricity keeps changes in stellar distance comparatively small.

Kelmar has a mass near 7.05 × 10²⁴ kilograms, radius near 6,690 kilometres and surface gravity near 10.5 metres per second squared. Oceans cover roughly 62% of its surface. Sea-level air pressure averages 115 kilopascals, with nitrogen dominant and breathable oxygen at a partial pressure near 21 kilopascals. Ozone, clouds and the atmosphere's depth shield the lower biosphere.

Clear skies appear blue under Seyrik's warm light. Cloud, dust, coastal haze and ice fog change visibility with region and season. Tropical seas drive evaporation, great currents moderate coastal temperatures, and mountain barriers cast rain shadows across inland plains. Winter temperatures deep in continental interiors can fall well below −30 °C.

Continents and Living Landscapes

Valnek occupies much of the northern middle latitudes. Mountain chains enclose cold plateaus, glacial valleys and forested slopes. Wetter western coasts support agriculture and cities, while eastern rain shadows open into steppe, stony uplands and cold desert. Major valley settlements grew where rivers met defensible mountain passes.

Serath stretches from warm northern latitudes into the southern temperate zone. Coastal jungles, wet forests and tidal vegetation give way inland to woodlands, savannas and forest-steppe. Mountains shelter dry basins, and the southern shores are cool, stormy and productive fishing grounds.

Kharun lies at high northern latitudes, with ice sheets, tundra, thaw-fed rivers and sheltered taiga. Permafrost and mineral deposits attracted settlements long before orbital industry. Torvek occupies the southern polar region. Ice dominates its interior, while volcanic peninsulas, open coastal pockets and rich surrounding seas sustain life and scientific installations.

Archipelagos and shallow continental shelves support distinctive animals, fisheries and naval traditions. Kelmar's organisms evolved independently under Seyrik's light. Leafed woody plants, grasses and marsh vegetation sustain grazing and omnivorous animals, which in turn support varied predators.

The Mahruni Homeworld

The ancestral Mahruni were carnivorous predators of mountain and forest country. Their food economy developed around managed prey, fisheries, preservation and crops grown to feed livestock. Modern production includes cultivated meat and complete synthetic rations alongside farms and fisheries. Animal-derived nutritional requirements remain central to civilian provisioning and military logistics.

Kelmar's large cities cluster around temperate shorelines, river valleys, productive upland basins and transport corridors. The capital, Karvek, occupies a fortified Valnek plateau basin served by mountain roads, rail and orbital ascent infrastructure. Velsa is a western maritime hub; Torveth centres on heavy manufacturing at a Serath river delta; and Khorin handles equatorial and interplanetary freight.

Clans maintain halls, schools, businesses and chapters across these settlements. Each contains members of the Warrior, Scholar, Artificer, Merchant and Laborer castes and is governed by its Warriors. Young prospects compete for available places, with prestigious clans attracting applicants from across the planet and the wider system. Membership is earned rather than inherited from the mother, and a clan can operate in several regions.

Karvek's institutions favour formal records of service and professional qualification. Velsan clans draw influence from commerce and maritime work, while Torvethi clans benefit from engineering and industrial production. Khorin's traffic brings experienced travellers and specialists into local recruitment. Kharuni communities place considerable weight on preparations for severe weather, and Torvek's settlements sustain research, naval facilities and demanding logistics.

Mothers raise their children until they can support themselves. Household chores begin shortly after learning to walk, and children prepare their own meals by six Cycles, approximately 7.3 Kelmar years. Most remain with their mother until eighteen Cycles, approximately 21.8 local years, while acquiring increasing independence within the home. Mating establishes no paternal duties or shared custody. Employment, further training and clan selection commonly follow departure from the maternal household.

Residences provide private domestic space, secure storage and separate areas for receiving visitors. Cold regions require sheltered approaches and reliable heating, while warmer cities value ventilation and cooling. Furniture and protective equipment accommodate digitigrade feet, tails and the substantial difference in average male and female size. Public buildings display clan insignia, service records and memorials alongside the institutions that use them.

Vareki predominates in central government and Valnek, Serathi across much of the southern commercial and industrial region, and the Kharuni languages in the north. Concord is widely taught for interstellar service and trade. Regional food traditions range from Valneki broths and preserved meats to western marine foods and Serathi seared dishes, all supplying the requirements of an obligate carnivore.

Sexual maturity and departure from the maternal home usually occur near eighteen Cycles, approximately 21.8 Kelmar years. Legal adulthood begins at twenty Cycles, approximately 24.2 local years. Average natural lifespan is about one hundred Cycles, approximately 121.2 local years.

Public Observances

Galactic Standard time coordinates government, service and interplanetary travel, while local seasonal work follows Kelmar's orbital year of approximately 0.82535 Cycle. One Cycle equals approximately 1.2116 local years. First Opening is observed at mil 220 of each Cycle and commemorates the indigenous FTL demonstration within Seyrik; Compact Observance, at mil 600, marks the protectorate agreement. These observances move through local seasons. Other festivals follow regional events such as returning fishing fleets and the reopening of mountain routes.

Magnetic Field and Radiation

Kelmar has active geology, internal heat and an iron-bearing core, but only a weak global magnetic field. The thick atmosphere remains an important shield. High-altitude terrain, exposed flight paths and orbital facilities face greater radiation burdens than lowland towns, especially during energetic stellar events.

The Mahruni's evolved radiotolerance improves their survival and recovery after some exposures. Protective suits, shelter and radiation monitoring remain useful. Their separate Void-numb biology prevents the awakening of magical sensitivity while leaving them vulnerable to sufficiently severe physical or anomalous harm.

Ishra and the Orbital Economy

Ishra is about 2,900 kilometres across and circles Kelmar at approximately 340,000 kilometres in 504 standard hours. Its tides affect the coasts below. Ancient basalt surfaces and polar ice traps support lunar mining, astronomy and engineering.

Orbital terminals, shipyards, navigation arrays, repair facilities and rotating habitats connect Kelmar to the rest of Seyrik. Lunar settlements and orbital infrastructure began under independent Mahruni institutions. They continue to operate within the protectorate's domestic jurisdiction.

Government and Helios

The Protectorate of Kelmar governs its own courts, domestic taxation, industries and public institutions through the Conclave of Standards and First Standard. Clans sponsor candidates and compete for influence within the recognized district, civic and service institutions, with principal governing offices held by the Warrior caste. Helios supplies strategic defence, gate access and jump-ship transport in exchange for universal military service from twenty to twenty-five Cycles, approximately 24.2–30.3 Kelmar years. The five-Cycle term is approximately 6.1 local years. About fifteen per cent of conscripts serve within Seyrik and eighty-five per cent abroad. Mothers with dependent young receive local duties that allow them to continue raising them and are included in the home-service allocation. Kelmar pays Helios no fiscal tax.

The Mahruni had developed operational practical FTL before conquest and were already a Tier 2 civilization. The compact is consequently a recognized form of interstellar protectorate. Kelmar pays Helios no fiscal tax, mineral royalty or commodity tribute. Its citizens retain legal personhood, property rights and domestic self-government.
