The cosmos as we know it, including all the realms and planes of the world tree, is said to be the second cosmos to exist. It's founding principle is a balance between the metaphysical forces of order and chaos, unlike the previous first cosmos, which was a non-existent balance between metaphysical light and dark. The current revised version of the myth is as follows.

Before the age before ages, before the universe before the universe, there was nothing, except the One. What was the One? Nothing, yet everything. Everything was the One. In this nothingness, there was no colour, no senses, not even time.

Loneliness led to imperfection, and the first universe was born when the One wished for something to change, and for something to happen. In their restlessness and loneliness, the One split themselves into two halves. But… It didn’t work the way they intended. They saw two beings in front of them, one made of pure light, and the other made of pure darkness. The One realized that they had forgotten what they were made of, and were now nothing, a Void.

The disparity between Light and Dark formed the basis of the first cosmos, its inherent physics and morality. They made heat and cold, life and death, good and bad. Despite being a powerless husk now, the Void was excited for something to finally happen.

But the Light and Dark were too different. There was no balance between the two, no middle-ground to be had. No twilight, dawn, or dusk. No neutrality, bitter-sweetness, or mediation. The two realities would bicker and fight, forgetting to listen to the reason of Void. They each wished to be the one sole reality, not realizing that the loneliness of being the sole reality was what led the One to create them in the first place.

The gods and mortals of this universe were equally divided in their existence, and waged constant war against each other. Conflict gave rise to change, and things happened. That was what the One wanted, right? Things to happen? If the Darkness took over and Light was weakened, there would be light-less eons of despair. Conversely, whenever the Light outshone the dark, there were scorching eras of fire.

Why couldn’t there be balance? Why would they not listen to the Void? “Listen to me! You’re me!” the Void would cry out, their voice falling on deaf ears. Nothingness was its own strength, and in their despair, the Void carved out some of the Light and Dark’s power. They wished to become the mediator, but once again, it didn’t work the way they intended. They accidentally created a fourth reality- Balance. They would keep the two in peace, and not let either fully win out. The three realities, Light, Dark, and Balance, set to make the cosmos a better place, forgetting about the Void once more.

They failed. Balance was too weak, only having shown up when the world was already made. The lack of entropy made the world impossible to maintain, and it was slowly starting to collapse in on itself with the constant increase of matter. Infinite light, and infinite darkness. The cosmos was rotten to the core, having started on flawed foundations in the first place. The Void had resigned themselves to this fate. Would there only be suffering if things were allowed to happen?

In the center of the universe was the planet on which the Void spent their days, spectating the wars and destruction of the cosmos all around them. One day, near the end of the universe, a mortal made the trek all the way to meet the Void, no, the One.

This mortal, now called Gigari, wished for the Void to take it all back, and destroy the cosmos. They commanded the Void, their creator, to stop lamenting their failures and to give their creations the rest they deserve. The Void asked Girari why their want of death justified the destruction of everything, and Gigari replied that it is too late to fix the world. All that had happened, happened only because the One wanted someone to talk to. It’s said that Gigari and the Void talked for hours and days and years, discussing everything that had happened and everyone that had existed. The Void knew everyone, as everyone who was born was a shard of the One.

The Void, even as a near-omnipotent creator, was too scared to go back to their life of solitude. Despite all its flaws, this world was all that exists, and was something to be cherished. Gigari’s last words to the Void were a simple statement. “If we’re all shards of you, then save all of yourself.”

There would be no salvage. The Void rose into the heart of the cosmos, and called it all back. Every piece of matter, all life, all their shards. As the universe was being sucked back into the Void’s singularity, the Light and the Dark tried to fight their fate. They were the first children, and vowed to persist. Even as they were absorbed back into the Void, they promised to the Void that they would never be forgotten.

The world unmade, there was nothing once more. The One stared at themselves, finally remembering what they used to look like- The brightest darkness, and the darkest light. They were everything once more. In this nothingness that lacked even time, they hugged themselves in a fetal position for eternity. Savouring this peace one final time, they remembered all life that had existed. All those “Me’s.”

The One then split themselves once more, creating the second universe- Our cosmos. And this time, they did it better. The Light and Dark are pure, and they corrupt. This world was split into two new realities, Order and Chaos. And in the middle, Balance, this time from the beginning. This world would have creation and entropy, stability and destruction, design and evolution. Our laws of physics are directly tied into the concepts of Order and Chaos. The two still opposed each other and fought, but never to the degree that Light or Dark would, since they had Balance to step in whenever things got too one-sided.

Balance created the first god of this new cosmos, from whom we even get the word itself. Elder Kosmos created the universe as we know it, as Order created Elder Mekalus and Chaos created Elder Dobuna. The three Elders would be the custodians of the will of the realities, creating a subconscious pact to prevent the primordial war between the realities from ever happening again.

Light and Dark still existed, as they vowed they would. The forgotten old realities lacked almost all of their old foundational power, as their reign was over. Regardless, perhaps out of the Void’s love, the pure light and the all-consuming darkness would find their place within the balance of this new cosmos. Though, they were not the only remnants.

They say that the Monoliths and the Old Ones are the gods from the first cosmos, warped and distorted into new forms in their unexplainable existence. Perhaps it is the Void’s empathy that allowed some of their shards to retain their souls even into the new world. It has to be, surely, because so easily forgotten is Gigari.

The only named denizen of the first universe, the Void remade Gigari once the three realities had left the birthplace. Gigari’s soul and memories intact, they were now the only one to remember everyone that had existed before. And they would keep to this sacred duty from then onwards. Elder Gigarion became the god of Oblivion, making sure that no one is ever truly forgotten.

As far as the unknowable and unexplainable Void goes, it’s said that whenever we talk to ourselves, it is simply an echo of the first thing to ever happen- The One’s wish to have someone to talk to.
