Living and Travelling in Downtime

Not all tasks and duties that characters are required—or might choose—to accomplish in between adventures require them to invest DTA slots.

Travelling in Downtime

Travelling during the DT week is only allowed within the confines of the downtime zone.

There are teleportation circles available for free use by the general public in key locations across the downtime zone, namely (from west to east): Stoneleaf; the Halfway House inn; Daring Heights; Fort Ettin; New Hillborrow; and Port Ffirst. Travel among any of these locations is instantaneous and costs no DTA slots. Travel to or from places that have no teleportation circle may take up to a Light DTA slot but some places are close enough that no slots are required. If you don’t know whether a DTA slot is needed to make a journey, ask the DTDMs.

Only in very exceptional circumstances, the DTDMs might allow travelling to other destinations outside the safe zone during the DT week. DMs may also give permission but are asked to let DTDMs know when they do so.

Session starting locations

Adventuring sessions often advertise in advance the location within the downtime zone where the characters will set out from. They will usually be places with public teleportation circles but you should check and make sure your characters spend the necessary DTA slots to travel to the starting location if this is needed.

Exceptionally, if your character should have spent any DTA slots getting to a session starting location but did not (for example because they unexpectedly got into the session from the waiting list), they should spend the required slot(s) in the subsequent downtime week instead. DTDMs will help you adjudicate these situations.

Lifestyle Expenses and Living Places

Your characters still existing in Kantas in between adventures means that you will need to consider their living costs every week. Their expenses will be based on the style of life and location they choose.

Every week, you should subtract the living costs for your character from their overall wealth as detailed in the Player's Handbook. The Wretched lifestyle requires a character to spend all their downtime trying to survive. No DTA slots are available for them that week.

Most adventurers choose to reside in the towns of Daring Heights or Port Ffirst, the village of New Hillborrow, or the large red-brick stronghold called Fort Ettin which was specially constructed for adventurers. But if you want your character to live somewhere else in the downtime zone, this can usually be arranged by discussion with the DTDMs.

The table below lists some places where adventurers often live, with the associated lifestyle expenses. (Note that Fort Ettin is specially subsidised for adventurers, meaning living costs there are one tier cheaper than they are elsewhere. For example a Modest lifestyle at Fort Ettin costs only 14 sp per week.) If you want your character to live somewhere not listed in the table – for example a rented house in Daring Heights or a cottage on the edge of the Feythorn Forest – discuss it with the DTDMs to agree what tier of lifestyle expenses to pay for the associated location.

Downtime Activities Outside the Main Settlements

Not all the Downtime Activities listed in the following pages are available everywhere in the downtime zone. For example there is not much gambling to be had in the open fields and rolling hills of the Dawnlands countryside, and there is no pit fighting arena in the peaceful village of New Hillborrow. Each DTA page gives information on where that DTA can be done but if in doubt, you can always ask the DTDMs.
