During downtime, characters in the DT safe zones might want to buy and sell gems, jewellery and other goods by interacting with NPCs. Players can use the following rules to do so. Characters that for any reason are away from the DT safe zones have very limited opportunities for trade that have to be exceptionally approved by the DTDMs.
All items for which prices are provided in the Mundane Items table can be bought in small quantities from NPCs. The only exceptions to this rule are camels, elephants, and waterborne vehicles. They cannot be bought or sold without consulting the DTDMs. All other mundane items can be sold to NPCs for their nominal value if new, or half if used, but not severely damaged. Repairing a damaged mundane item, when possible and allowed, restores the item to a used status for the purpose of selling it on.
Buying and selling magic items is a complex business, and requires the approval of a DTDM. The purchase and sale of magic items is generally not possible in downtime except as set out below and in the separate page on The Emporium of Pre-Loved Wonders.
The Kantas-specific Price List for both Mundane and Magical items is here
Potions and oils with a value of less than 1000gp can be purchased during the Downtime Window. However, availability is not guaranteed. You must roll a d100 for each potion or oil you seek to see if it is available. The chance to find your first item is 80%. Each additional roll beyond that reduces your chance by 20% for potions worth less than 300gp and by 30% for potions worth 300gp and more.
Example:
Veridian needs a Potion of Flying for an upcoming adventure on the Plane of Air. He also wants to find a Potion of Lightning Resistance, as he thinks he might be fighting some cloud giants. Veridian has an 80% chance to find the Potion of Flying, and rolls a 72 on the d100. Success! A Potion of Resistance costs 370, so Veridian has a 50% chance to find his second potion. He rolls a 93 on his d100 and heads off in search of some rubber boots.
The exception to this rule is Healing Potions (Regular). Each character may purchase up to three of these per Downtime Window without the need to roll. Potions with a value over 1000gp cannot normally be purchased in Downtime, though you may be able to commission one specially. Speak to a DTDM if you wish to try.
If a character would like to buy a spell scroll, the availability of scrolls varies depending on their level (see the Buying Scroll table). The DTDMs allow one d100 roll per scroll per DT week to determine availability. For selling scrolls, they have a certain likelihood of being sold of 100% − (10% × the spell level). Scrolls above level 4 cannot be sold in downtime.
Buying Scrolls
Scroll Level | Availability |
1-3 | Always available |
4 | 50% |
5 | 35% |
6-9 | Not available |
Tuning Forks are a crucial component for the powerful spell, Plane Shift. Finding the right fork for the job, however, is a difficult process. We've set out below how that can be achieved in your Downtime between adventures:
A character can do the Research DTA in Daring Academy to find the tone and the material, successfully obtaining two major pieces of information, in order to get a tuning fork made.
With this information in hand, you can then take said information to a blacksmith in Daring Heights who can then make the tuning fork for you. However, the plane the fork is for will determine how much it will cost, as per below.
Plane | Price |
Material Plane | 250gp (no Research DTA necessary) |
Feywild or Shadowfell | 250gp and 2 pieces of Major Information from Research DTA |
Elemental Planes | 500gp and 2 pieces of Major Information from Research DTA |
All other Planes | 750gp and 2 pieces of Major Information from Research DTA |
It's also possible that you could find them out on quests or in especially magical locations like the markets of Sigil, but that is entirely at DM discretion.
The following are available to buy at Pipper's Wonderous Emporium in Daring Heights (not to be confused with the Emporium of Pre-Loved Wonders in Port Ffirst):
These can be bought (in reasonable quantities!) without consulting DTDMs or rolling to check availability.
Characters are free to trade with other characters without consulting the DMs. However trading between characters controlled by the same player is generally not allowed and needs to be exceptionally approved by the DMs. The lending of magic items is also not allowed in general and needs to be exceptionally approved by the DMs.
In the unlikely event that you wish to sell a magic item and cannot find another character willing to purchase it, you may be able to find an NPC buyer. NPCs don’t generally have as much ready coinage as adventurers (nor as much use for magic swords or fancy wands). As such, you cannot sell an item worth more than 3000gp to an NPC, and they will never pay full price. In order to sell an item to an NPC, you must first make a DC15 Investigation check to find a buyer. You may expend an Upper Class Contact to add +5 to this roll. Once you have found a buyer, you’ll need to negotiate a price. The baseline price is 50% of the value of the item. This can be increased by succeeding on a Charisma (Persuasion) check.
Persuasion Check | Value Increase |
1-10 | +1% |
11-15 | +5% |
16-21 | +10% |
22+ | +15% |
Magic items can also be sold to The Emporium of Pre-Loved Wonders which is located in Port Ffirst. This has it's own mechanics of selling and buying which are outlined in more detailed on it's own subpage.
