Last we left off…

The city gives nothing for free, and every step across its frozen iron floor costs time, trust, or blood.

The morning opened in the cold stillness of the Rat's Nest with Tessa Mireille's oilcloth records spread across a wooden crate. What they revealed transformed the Consolidation Engine from a shadowy rumor into a horrifying, clinical reality. Seventeen cohorts across three years, written in ink that grew steadily redder page by page. Cohort 14-C yielded a name from the Lower Vents—someone you knew—marked with two words in heavy ink: Aethenaeum Transfer — Process Complete. Most critically, the substrate metric projection leaves a window of three to six weeks minus eleven days. Furthermore, a clipped note at the back of the bundle delivered a cryptic directive: Check your arms. Not the brands. The inside of the elbow.

The work did not stop for horror. Moving through a strangely tense transit corridor, you met with Silas. The broker delivered six pristine Sublevel Sanitation Inspection passes, along with an unmarked envelope containing upper office access passes—a 3-day "clerical error" in your favor that signals Silas has quietly placed his bet on your survival. In exchange, Silas received the cohort data to cross-reference against his own missing clients, taking three names into his ledger.

At Maren's Workshop, the news deepened. Maren applied reformulated suppression compounds (6-day hold) and produced an envelope containing 19 names from the Lower Vents cross-referenced across Tessa's data and Silas's records. Maren presented a new framework: the substrate integration from eighteen months ago was something done to two subjects rather than extracted—realing that two integrated subjects are still out there in the city. Meanwhile, Silas instructed Maren to archive two specific restricted pages (the anomaly entry and Cohort 16 projection) in the cabinet with the good lock.

Elsewhere in the forge district, Rekki confirmed that Dalla has pulled her search from the transit corridor, shifting her focus to something larger and handing Silver Tail's file to Joss. Rekki is spending the next three days engineering a diversion while quietly sounding out dissatisfied Pale Knives for a potential coup.

After dropping an invitation in Tessa's Copper District post office box, her answer arrived on small, pressed paper: "I have spent eighteen months being afraid of the wrong floor. Tell me when and where. — T"

Returning to the Rat's Nest to prepare for the 12-minute run to meet Tessa at The Cinderblock, the trap sprang silently. Klackers spotted a stationary watcher outside. The service alley cat had fled. Inside the hideout, the jury-rigged signal light blinked once. Twice. Three times.

Then, the signal went steady. And then, it went dark.

Someone outside has done this before. The room is quiet, the draft is cold, and the clock is ticking down to the meeting at the Cinderblock.

Key developments and revelations

📜 Lore & Operational Intel

  • The 11-day Window: The next Mountain Infrastructure Authority (MIA) sublevel inspection occurs in 11 days. This is the target operational window for the Aethenaeum assault.

  • Tessa's Cohort Records: Confirmed 17 cohorts over 3 years. Substrate metric projection indicates 3 to 6 remaining (minus 11 days elapsed).

  • Elbow Inspection Directive: Tessa’s notes specifically advise inspecting the inside of the elbows, distinct from the suppression brand locations.

👥 NPCs Met & Faction Dynamics

  • Silas (Committed Bet): Delivered upgraded credentials and upper office passes. Cross-referencing 3 missing clients against cohort data; sent 2 critical anomaly pages to Maren's locked cabinet.

  • Maren (Resource & Strategist): Refreshed compounds 6 days. Compiled a list of 19 missing Lower Vents residents.

  • Rekki (Plotting): Taking 3 days to design a major diversion and gauge internal Pale Knives support against Dalla. Warns that Dalla will eventually demand a direct meeting with Silver Tail.

  • Tessa Mireille (Rendezvous Set): Agreed to meet at The Cinderblock. Stated she was "afraid of the wrong floor."

💰 Loot & Resources Secured

  • Sublevel Sanitation Credentials: 6 sets of official forged passes for the Aethenaeum administrative sublevels.

  • Upper Office Access Passes: Bonus high-tier clearance passes provided by Silas.

  • The 19-Name Ledger: Maren’s verified list of lower-vent subjects linked to Aethenaeum cohort IDs.

  • Reformulated Suppression Compounds: Good for 6 days of brand suppression.

🎭 Narrative & Roleplay Decisions

  • The Perimeter Crisis: The warning light is dark and someone is outside the Rat's Nest. Does your character advocate for The Escape (racing past/around watchers to reach Tessa in 12 minutes) or The Hold (reverse infiltration, killing all lights and hiding in place)?

  • The Other Subjects: Knowing there are two people in the city who underwent substrate integration 18 months ago, how does the group plan to search for them?

  • The 19 Names: You hold the names of 19 local families' missing loved ones. How does this concrete human cost shift your group's priorities during the upcoming assault?
