Gen Con is easily the busiest and largest tabletop RPG event of the year, where some of the biggest players in the industry make their announcements. If you weren’t able to make it this year, then you might have missed some of those announcements. It’s time to catch up on the biggest news from Gen Con 2025.
Critical Role Campaign 4 is coming
The next season of Critical Role has finally been confirmed! The most popular actual play series in existence is usually DM-ed by voice actor Matthew Mercer, at least in its main campaigns (other folks have DM-ed for Critical Role spin-off series). Finally, it seems that Mercer is getting a break from DM duties with Campaign 4 thanks to Brennan Lee Mulligan, who will be taking over as dungeon master.
Mulligan is best known for GMing for another popular actual play series - Dimension 20. This will bring an interesting flavour to this next CR campaign, as Mulligan tends to take a more comedic approach to being a game master than Mercer. Travis Willingham, Critical Role CEO and cast member, appears to be especially excited about what Mulligan could bring to the upcoming campaign:
“We’ve been enormous fans of Brennan’s for many years now, and when it came to giving both Matthew Mercer and the world of Exandria a bit of a breather, Brennan felt like the perfect storyteller to take our community somewhere entirely new.” (Polygon)
Critical Role campaign 4 will premiere on October 2nd on Beacon.tv, as well as the CR YouTube and Twitch channels, before being available for VOD from the following Monday.
New Daggerheart content revealed
Daggerheart, the recent fantasy tabletop RPG from Critical Role studio Darrington Press, will be getting a slew of new content soon.
It was revealed that a new campaign book called Love & Magic is on its way. If you’re familiar with Critical Role, then you might know about Tusk Love: the fictional romance book that became a beloved and long-running joke in the series. Love & Magic is apparently inspired by this fictional book, and will see Daggerheart players indulging in a romantic matchmaking story.
Additionally, it was announced that a new world is currently being developed for Daggerheart. Though little information was unveiled about this world, it was revealed that the co-creators of Dungeons & Dragons’ iconic Eberron setting - Keith Baker and Jenn Ellis - would be behind its creation.
The last major Daggerheart announcement from Gen Con was that Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford would be joining the Darrington Press team. This is a big deal because Perkins and Crawford used to be designers for the Dungeons & Dragons’ team, and played a pretty important role steering the biggest TTRPG in the world, so their experience can’t be understated.
Starfinder: Second Edition released
Starfinder is Pathfinder’s sci fi sibling and has been waiting 8 years for a second edition - until now. Gen Con 2025 saw the release of Starfinder: Second Edition’s Player Core Book, which essentially serves as the player’s handbook for the science fiction roleplaying game. Released alongside this was a Starfinder 2E adventure book called Murder in Metal City, as well as a supplementary novel called Era of the Eclipse. The GM Core book for Starfinder: Second Edition is set to be released on September 3rd.

Tremeraire - The Roleplaying Game announced
Continuing the current trend of TTRPG adaptions, a roleplaying game based on the Tremeraire series of period fantasy novels by Naomi Novik was announced.
The Tremeraire series takes place in an alternate version of the Napoleonic Wars - which took place during the early 19th century between the French Empire and various European powers. Rather than just fighting with cannons and muskets, Tremeraire sees also its armies battling in dog fights between dragons.
Creating the Tremeraire RPG will be Magpie Games, the publisher behind several existing tabletop RPG adaptions: including the Root RPG and the popular Avatar: Legends. The title will be based on Magpie’s original AE System, with a quick start set to be released early next year and a crowdfunding campaign for the game coming in Spring 2026. The full release of the Tremeraire TTRPG is currently set for Gen Con 2027.
Official Diablo TTRPG unveiled
Turns out that Diablo - the iconic video game series from Blizzard - is being turned into a tabletop roleplaying game.
Gen Con 2025 saw the unveiling of an official Diablo TTRPG from Glass Cannon Unplugged, a publisher that has made a name for itself releasing tabletop adaptations of video games like Frost Punk: The Board Game and Apex Legends: The Board Game. The Diablo RPG will include its own custom D6 dice pool gameplay system, and will apparently feature a tabletop version of the hack-and-slash gameplay from the video games, as well as plenty of loot for players to grab.

Perhaps the most interesting element of the Diablo TTRPG is its team of creators: which includes some pretty big names such as Joe LeFavi (Blade Runner RPG), John Harper (Blades in the Dark) and Shawn Tomkin (Ironsworn). These notable names continue into the team behind the upcoming Diablo TTRPG anthology adventure book, which features Graham McNeil (Warhammer), Mick Neilson (Diablo) and MJ Newman (Arkham Horror).
The Kickstarter campaign for Diablo: The Roleplaying Game is set to be launched Q4 2025.
