Overview

Karmyra, the Balancer of Scales, is the deity of retribution and reward, pain and healing. They are shown as a two-sided figure, one half in golden armor and warmth, the other veiled in shadow and smoke, carrying a bloodied short sword in one hand and a glowing salve in the other. Their faithful hold that every action has a consequence and every choice can turn either way. Judges, tricksters, healers, and opportunists all look to them.

Tenets

Edicts

  • Use both retribution and reward in your actions.

  • Use cunning and trickery to reach your goals.

  • Balance acts of pain with acts of healing.

  • Favor chaos and change over stagnation.

Anathema

  • Always choose only reward or only retribution.

  • Act in fixed, predictable patterns.

  • Refuse to heal those in need or inflict pain unjustly.

  • Promote order and unchanging stability.

The Church

The Church of Karmyra, known as The House of Scales, keeps the balance and teaches retribution and reward alike. It is feared as much as respected. Its clergy guide with cunning and decisive action, and never flinch from questions with no clean answer.

Structure
  • The Arbiter - highest rank; sets doctrine and has the final word in any dispute.

  • The Balanced Hand - regional leaders who guide followers and mediate disputes.

  • Judges of the Scale - clergy who deal out judgment by healing or by retribution.

  • Silver Coins - initiates and lay members who assist in rituals and keep the temples.

Rituals
  • The Flip of Fate - a two-faced coin settles a choice with no clear right answer.

  • The Binding Balance - a vow to keep balance and fairness in one's decisions.

  • The Scale's Offering - leaving one token of pain, such as a thorn, and one of healing, such as a flower.

  • The Night of Duality - a yearly accounting of the past year's mercies and punishments.

Duties
  • Judicators - mediate disputes and walk people through hard choices.

  • Keepers of the Scale - guard sacred sites and keep communities balanced.

  • Wandering Hands - missionaries who heal and deliver justice abroad.

Temples

Karmyra's temples are split down the middle, a Hall of Mercy for healing set against a darker Chamber of Retribution. Both open onto the Scale's Balance, under a huge hanging scale.

Worship

Karmyra's followers prize cunning and adaptability, and use their teachings to steer through questions with no clean answer. The church is feared and admired for its impartiality. In lawless regions it is the only justice on offer. Its healers are famous, and its enforcers leave fear among the guilty.

Types of Followers
  • Seekers of Justice - judges, mediators, and warriors who hold people to account.

  • Tricksters of Change - rogues, spies, and rebels who break up stagnation.

  • Healers of Mercy - physicians and caretakers who heal to offset the pain in the world.

  • Adventurous Opportunists - people who do well in an unpredictable world, weighing risk against reward.

Daily Practice
  • Begin each day with a coin flip, and let fate settle one small decision.

  • Account for the day's actions at nightfall, keeping kindness and discipline level.

  • Offer aid to those in need, but only where it serves a larger end.

  • Never fall into a pattern anyone can predict.

Aphorisms
  • "The blade that harms can also protect."

  • "Fortune and misfortune walk hand in hand."

Holidays
  • The Day of Duality - a spring equinox honoring the balance of retribution and reward. Communities settle disputes by coin flip, then feast on dishes that pair sweet against bitter.
