Overview

Achillan, the Unyielding Vanguard, is the god of courage, determination, and leadership. He is shown as a stern figure in bright armor, holding a spear wound with a laurel wreath. His faithful hold that courage is the mastery of fear, and that a leader leads by example. Warriors, rulers, and anyone who inspires others look to him, most of all at the moments a hard choice has to be made.

Tenets

Edicts

  • Protect the weak.

  • Stand your ground against adversity.

  • Never back down from a challenge.

  • Inspire others to greatness.

Anathema

  • Show cowardice.

  • Abandon allies in need.

  • Surrender to a foe.

  • Break the morale of those fighting for a just cause.

The Church

The Order of the Vanguard is a martial faith as much as a religious one. It trains people to meet hardship with resolve and holds that leadership takes both strength and compassion. Rank is earned, not inherited.

Structure
  • High Commander — the church's leader; strategist and spiritual guide.

  • Lions of the Vanguard — regional leaders over the temples and their communities.

  • Wardens — traveling clerics, judges, and field commanders; the backbone of the order.

  • Shieldbearers — devotees in training.

Rituals
  • The Trial of Resolve — a yearly gauntlet that proves a Shieldbearer's courage.

  • The Rite of the Spear — a blessing before a dangerous mission.

  • The Oath of the Vanguard — the members' pledge: uphold courage, protect the weak, inspire others.

  • Day to day: sparring, weapon care, and public service.

Duties
  • Train militia and commoners to defend themselves.

  • Mediate disputes and train local leaders.

  • Send Wardens and Shieldbearers to hold towns, fight raiders, and aid the stricken.

Temples

Fortress-temples near borders and frontier towns, built around a sparring arena, with a meditation chamber and a community hall for training and counsel.

Worship

Achillan's followers value resilience and the drive to inspire. Commoners pray for the strength to endure, leaders for the sense to guide, and his champions rally allies in a fight. In hard times they form watch groups, rally resistance, and mediate disputes.

Types of Followers
  • Warriors & soldiers — the largest group: militia, knights, mercenaries.

  • Leaders & officials — mayors, councilors, those who must lead in a crisis.

  • Common folk — those praying for strength to endure, who band together for it.

  • Adventurers — who set out to protect, inspire, or prove themselves.

Daily Practice
  • The Morning Oath — "By Achillan's light, I will stand strong, protect those in need, and lead with honor."

  • Keeping weapons, armor, and tools in good order, as devotion.

  • Mentoring others; honoring acts of courage in the community.

Aphorisms
  • "Stand strong, and others will follow."

  • "Courage is the spark; unity is the fire."

Holidays
  • Day of the Vanguard — a solstice festival of courage and leadership: reenacted heroic tales, contests of strength and skill, and honors for the brave.
