Overview

Kerana, the Shadowed Player, is the goddess of strategy, games, deception, and cleverness. She is shown as a slender figure in black and silver robes with her face half lost in shadow, a rapier in one hand and a chess piece in the other. She teaches cunning, but she respects anyone who can read her moves and answer them. Tacticians, puzzlemasters, spies, and scholars look to her.

Tenets

Edicts

  • Bring cunning and strategy to everything you do.

  • Seek out games and puzzles, and master them.

  • Use deception and cleverness to reach your goals.

  • Encourage intellectual challenge and strategic thinking in others.

Anathema

  • Act without forethought or strategy.

  • Suppress creativity and cunning in others.

  • Deny the value of games and intellectual pursuits.

  • Solve problems by brute force alone.

The Church

The Church of Kerana, often called The Grandmaster's Veil, is built on intellect, cunning, and strategic mastery. Its followers treat life as a long game where every move counts, and hold that victory goes to whoever sees furthest and adapts fastest.

Structure
  • The Grandmaster — highest authority and Kerana's living proxy; leads by strategic skill.

  • Chessmasters — regional leaders who convene strategic councils and rituals.

  • Keepers of the Game — local clergy who run the temples and teach strategy.

  • Pawns of the Shadow — initiates and lay members who keep up the temples and gatherings.

Rituals
  • The Game of Shadows — followers play games of strategy against one another to sharpen their minds.

  • The Grand Puzzle — a yearly event of hard puzzles that test wit and creativity.

  • The Veiled Move — a private rite asking Kerana's help with a difficult problem.

  • The Trickster's Gambit — a holiday of small feats of cleverness and quiet misdirection.

Duties
  • Strategic Advisors — counsel rulers, generals, and scholars.

  • Keepers of Puzzles — guard the sacred games so they teach, not merely test.

  • Shadow Guides — wandering problem-solvers who try what others did not.

Temples

Kerana's temples, called Shadow Sanctuaries, test the visitor with puzzles, mazes, and hidden rooms. Worship centers on the Chessmaster's Hall and its oversized chessboard.

Worship

Kerana's followers prize intelligence and foresight, and treat life as a game in which every move counts. Her church carries weight among scholars and tacticians, and her people have decided wars and negotiations through planning alone. They are admired for it and accused of manipulation as often.

Types of Followers
  • Tacticians — generals and advisors who ask Kerana's help in planning.

  • Puzzlemasters — people who build and solve intellectual challenges, and honor the goddess for her cleverness.

  • Shadow Players — rogues and spies who share Kerana's taste for subtlety and deception.

Daily Practice
  • Solve a puzzle or play a game of strategy each day to keep the mind sharp.

  • Go back over recent decisions and ask whether they showed foresight or only reflex.

  • Look for the answer no one expects before reaching for force.

Aphorisms
  • "Cunning wins where strength falters."

  • "The game is never over until the final piece falls."

Holidays
  • The Game of Shadows — a new moon celebration at which followers gather over chess, go, and other games of strategy, honoring Kerana and keeping their minds sharp.
