Overview

Nerida, the Ocean's Whisper, is the goddess of oceans, tides, and storms. The sea feeds and the sea kills, and both are hers. She is shown as a graceful figure whose hair moves like the waves, carrying a conch shell or a trident. Her hand shows in the slow pull of the tide, in the quiet after a storm, and in open water without a shore in sight. Sailors, navigators, and coastal communities look to her for protection and guidance.

Tenets

Edicts

  • Aid those lost at sea.

  • Protect coastal communities.

  • Respect the balance of nature within oceans.

  • Celebrate the beauty and power of the ocean.

Anathema

  • Pollute the ocean.

  • Harm creatures of the deep unjustly.

  • Refuse aid to stranded sailors.

  • Disrupt the natural cycles of tides.

The Church

The Church of Nerida, the Tidekeeper's Sanctuary, is where sailors and coastal folk turn when the sea goes against them. It teaches that the ocean gives and takes in equal measure, and offers safe passage, aid to the lost, and protection for sea life.

Structure
  • High Tidekeeper — leader of the faith; reads Nerida's will.

  • Wavewardens — senior clergy over the temples and their rituals.

  • Stormcallers — traveling priests who aid sailors and bless ships.

  • Reefkeepers — clerics who protect marine life and the shallows.

  • Initiates of the Current — novices in training.

Rituals
  • Tide Blessings — sunrise and sunset ceremonies honoring the tides.

  • The Calling of the Deep — a prayer for safe passage and calm water.

  • Storm's Respite — after a storm, thanks for the living and names for the dead.

  • Ocean Offerings — shells, pearls, and food left at her altars.

  • Seafoam Baptism — a blessing for new sailors and new followers.

Duties
  • Preserve marine life and keep the sea's harvest sustainable.

  • Bless and counsel anyone setting out on the water.

  • Shield coastal settlements from storms; heal the hurt and settle disputes over the sea.

Temples

Coastal temples set with coral and seashells and built around running water, with smaller wavechapels on beaches and docks and reef shrines sunk where divers can reach them.

Worship

Nerida's followers are sailors, fishers, and coastal villagers. They take her for protector and provider both, and ask her for safe passage, full nets, and storms that pass them by. The faith binds coastal regions together, presses for sustainable practice, and turns out in force after a disaster.

Types of Followers
  • Sailors and navigators — ask her protection on every voyage.

  • Fishers and divers — rely on her for good catches and safe water.

  • Coastal villagers — honor her as guardian of their homes and livelihoods.

  • Marine conservationists — protect the ocean and its creatures in her name.

Daily Practice
  • Respect for the sea — take only what you need, and give thanks for it.

  • Aid for the lost — helping a stranded sailor is a sacred duty.

  • Reflection on tides — meditation as the tide rises and falls.

  • Ocean offerings — small daily thanks, from an altar gift to clearing a beach.

Aphorisms
  • "The tides turn, but the ocean endures."

  • "Every drop holds the vastness of the sea."

  • "To navigate the storm is to know the calm."

Holidays
  • Day of the Tides — a loud, crowded celebration up and down the coast, with ocean blessings, feasts, and offerings of shells and pearls to Nerida.
