Overview

Velaris, the Keeper of Arcane Shadows, is the god of arcane secrets, forbidden knowledge, and the shadows that hide them. Velaris is shown wrapped in darkness with glowing runes turning around them, and holds magic to be two things at once: a tool for enlightenment and a real danger. Scholars, mages, and seekers of lost truths turn to Velaris, weighing the pursuit of power against the duty to use it well.

Tenets

Edicts

  • Seek out lost or hidden knowledge.

  • Respect the duality of magic as a tool and a danger.

  • Protect arcane secrets from those unworthy of their power.

  • Embrace the mysteries of the unknown.

Anathema

  • Recklessly reveal forbidden knowledge.

  • Misuse magic for frivolous or destructive purposes.

  • Destroy knowledge or artifacts of arcane significance.

  • Deny others the right to seek enlightenment.

The Church

The Order of the Veiled Tome is a secretive, inward faith that hunts forbidden knowledge and then keeps it from the unworthy. It shelters scholars, mages, and seekers of truth, and teaches them to wield magic responsibly.

Structure
  • The Arcane Veil — leader of the Church, hidden from all but a few.

  • Keepers of the Tome — senior clergy over the archives and rituals.

  • Runecallers — priests who read runes and teach Velaris's doctrines.

  • Shadowseekers — traveling clergy who search for lost knowledge.

  • Initiates of the Veil — acolytes who preserve artifacts and sites.

Rituals
  • Rite of the Hidden Glyph — a secret ceremony to conceal or reveal knowledge.

  • Whispers of the Tome — a nightly meditation on what the day taught.

  • The Illumination — arcane runes cast to ask Velaris for guidance.

  • Binding of the Shadows — containing dangerous knowledge or artifacts.

  • The Seekers' Vigil — a vow to seek knowledge with wisdom and respect.

Duties
  • Preserve forbidden knowledge and keep it safe.

  • Guide those pursuing enlightenment in the arcane arts.

  • Teach and interpret Velaris's sacred runes.

  • Stop the misuse of dangerous or destructive magic.

Temples

Hidden libraries, rune halls, and underground archives, open only to those who prove themselves. The Tome's Beacon is said to hold Velaris's most closely guarded secrets.

Worship

Velaris's followers honor both the light and the shadow in magic, and work to uncover arcane knowledge and to protect it, treating both as duties. Their Church builds a culture of curiosity and restraint, keeping arcane secrets from misuse and holding recovered truths for later generations.

Types of Followers
  • Mages and wizards — seek Velaris's guidance in mastering the arcane arts.

  • Scholars of the forbidden — study hidden truths and forbidden knowledge.

  • Guardians of secrets — keep dangerous knowledge out of the wrong hands.

  • Shadow seekers — go into the unknown to recover lost truths.

Daily Practice
  • Daily meditation on one's discoveries and purpose.

  • Weighing the pursuit of enlightenment against the duty to protect it.

  • Time set aside to safeguard or record knowledge.

  • Honoring the unknown and the part it plays in discovery.

Aphorisms
  • "The shadows speak only to those who listen."

  • "Every rune is a door to truth."

  • "Wisdom lies in knowing when to conceal."

Holidays
  • Night of Veiled Truths — a somber celebration. Followers gather to meditate, perform arcane rituals, and honor the mysteries that guide them.
