Jaylienne Bramblebrook: The Chef of Fort Joy
A year ago in the grand kitchens of the Theadian Empire, Jaylienne Bramblebrook stood amidst towering dwarves, their sturdy hands wielding massive iron pots and their booming voices commanding the kitchen with authority. Jaylienne, a halfling woman with a heart full of passion but hands far too small to carry the weight of a dwarven stew pot, had always dreamed of being a great chef.
But dreaming was one thing, reality was another.
Her days were filled with the clang of kitchenware and the ever-present scent of roasted meats and spiced ales, but her place in the kitchen was... precarious at best. She was clumsy, soft-spoken, and often lost in a whirlwind of ingredients. More than once, she fumbled with heavy dishes, spilled broths that had simmered for hours, or miscalculated the spice blend of an important dish, earning frustrated sighs from her superiors. They tolerated her, but no one praised her. No one sought out Jaylienne’s cooking.
When Vongarn Greatbeard, the Crown Prince, decreed that his brother Brogarn should master the culinary arts, it was clear Jaylienne’s already fragile position was doomed. Brogarn, with his noble name and disciplined approach, quickly outshone her. It wasn’t even a contest. One day, she was struggling to perfect a simple hearthbread, the next, Brogarn was serving the court a perfectly balanced honey-glazed roast that had nobles singing his praises.
There was no need for her anymore.
Jaylienne was dismissed, quietly and without ceremony. No outcry, no objections, only relief from the other chefs. But outside the kitchen, word spread fast. To fail so spectacularly in her craft? To be dismissed so thoroughly? It was a disgrace. Ashamed, she retreated to her modest home, refusing to step foot outside. Her neighbors whispered. No one reached out.
And then, the worst happened.
One night, overwhelmed with grief, loneliness, and the crushing weight of failure, her emotions spiraled beyond her control. A sharp, raw energy surged from within her, unlike anything she had ever felt before. The walls of her home cracked as light exploded from her body. Fire followed. Her house was gone in an instant, reduced to rubble and embers. But worse, the flames spread. Other homes burned. People screamed. One of the wooden beams from her home exploded away from her house and flew down to a lower part of the city which ended up killing a young boy.
Jaylienne, who had never even conjured a spark in her life, had just unleashed the destructive force of Source Magic.
Just months prior, the 5 rulers of E'fa Sylviath had made their decree, those who wielded Source uncontrollably were to be collared and sent to Fort Joy, the renamed prison island. No exceptions. Jaylienne was no criminal, but she was dangerous. And so, still reeling from the horror of what she had done, she was taken.
Fort Joy was meant to be her punishment. A cage for those deemed unsafe. But for Jaylienne, it became something else.
Here, among the exiled, the feared, the forgotten, she found something she had lost long ago, purpose. The island was rich with new ingredients, exotic fish from its shores, strange fruits growing in the wild. Here, no one sneered at her cooking. No one dismissed her.
She had no grand kitchen, no noble audience. Just a fire, fresh ingredients, and hungry souls who had suffered far worse than she had. So she cooked.
And they loved her for it.
Her food became the one comfort in a place of despair. Her meals brought warmth when hope seemed lost. In time, even the most hardened prisoners would trade stories with her over a shared meal. She was no longer the clumsy, unappreciated cook of the Theadian kitchens, she was Chef Jaylienne, the heart of Fort Joy.
For the first time in her life, she was truly happy.
And maybe… just maybe… she never wanted to leave.
