“Five miles underground, and every step is ours.” ~ veteran Waymaker
Pilgrim’s Passage cuts through the central range near the southwest corner of the Scarred Lands, linking Bellwatch and Rookhaven to points east. There was a vault here once, burrowed into the mountainside. After the Return, crews sealed the side passages and drove the central corridor through to daylight on the far side. The underground trek is nearly five miles in all and is generally considered safe. Rumors persist that some of the side doors still open from the other side, just not for long.
At each mouth of the Passage there’s a Waymakers booth with a lockbox, a ledger, and a Deed Board: wooden tags on pegs. You either pay coin, or you take a tag and do the posted task while you cross. Drop the finished tag at the far booth; if you don’t complete it, you settle coin there.
Foot: a small toll per person
Pack animal: modest extra
Wagon: higher rate, scaled by load
Tags are color-marked for effort.
Parties pick one tag per five travelers.
Wagons take a heavier tag.
Top the lamps: carry a small oil flask; refill two lamp niches and trim wicks.
Chalk the marks: refresh the ¼-mile chalk marks and note any missing mile stones.
Sweep the tread: use a hand broom and pan to clear loose scree at a flagged bend.
Bell check: sound the mid-corridor bell once, log time and echo quality in the booth ledger.
Gravel carry: haul one sack to a soft patch and tamp it level with the wooden rammer.
Drain the drip: clear a silted floor drain or bucket thirty pulls from the mid-cistern.
Shutter service: wipe soot and test three lamp shutters; report any that stick.
Timber haul: move two shoring timbers from the near stock to the mid alcove.
Oil cask ferry: deliver one small cask to the mid store and bring back an empty.
Tool return: tow the waymakers’ handcart from one mouth to the other.
You take a tag (wood, stamped with the deed).
At the far booth, return the tag. The keeper stamps your tally strip (a paper slip) as proof.
If you bail on the deed, you pay coin at the far end and drop the tag in the red rack for reassignment.
Keep right at bends. Do not block the line while working.
No open flame beyond the lamp niches; use shutters only.
If you hear a double bell from the mid station, hold at the nearest niche until a Waymaker crew member passes.
