Episode 18 Synopsis

In a memory from roughly two years earlier, Whisper accompanies Madame Iris, Stilt, and Bumble to Havel's Haunches in Andros Port. Four thugs overwhelm him until Ernan Baldemar appears with guitar and rapier, and the strangers recognize an immediate, almost destined bond. Months later in Gavra, an enforcer tortures Ernan over a stolen necklace bearing House Wilhelmina's sigil even though Whisper has the necklace. Whisper hides it, bluffs his way into the warehouse, incapacitates the captor, and frees the friend who never betrayed him.

In the ruined Gavran court, Mal'El Syphus recalls the three Syphus Blades and animates the dead Crystalline spell-swords before dueling Alderian Titus. The company retreats while still aiding Mal'El, but Titus destroys the animated armor and nearly turns the party's glycyrin bomb against the castle. Mal'El eventually drives all three blades through Titus and takes the Dark Scepter, only for the artifact to burn him. Titus turns himself into shadow within the scepter and hurls Mal'El, the blades, and a final blast through the closing portal, shattering the distant Crystalline fortress. Six commanders aboard the northern fleet awaken as their occupying shadows return to the scepter, leaving seven living presences inside. Torin takes the artifact after praying to Sethis, beginning a daily struggle against its influence.

Selendra returns, identifies herself as the Black Queen, admits manipulating Gavra's houses and placing contracts on the company, and promises to rebuild her rule with the recovered Velpan and Felrick evidence. She sends three ships to seek Lily's Song, pledges the Maelstrodomus in ten days, gives the party five hundred gold to clear Charlie's debt, and reunites Whisper with his freed grandmother. Normandy then forces the head of the Felricks to swear fealty to Selendra, while Whisper steals an ornate goat-headed inkwell. The company departs for Piln in a chartered caravan led by Maxis and guarded by Nicias and the released Silas, recovers the injured Odo, and diverts to Ephthalas after Torin dreams of its sealed door. At the ancient temple, Sethis tells Torin she will take the scepter at a price she cannot stop, the door opens, and darkness pours across the floor.
