Episode 09 Synopsis

The former Rue remembers that his true name is Torin of the Hidden Moon and identifies the temple as an ancient Veyan sanctuary to Sethis, goddess of twilight. He explains that Sethis survives in modern worship as Eth, goddess of new beginnings, though his recovered knowledge remains fragmented. Far away in Gavra, a guard reports evidence that the recent attacks trace back to shipments from the Shattered Isles rather than the mainland. Silas Palligref murders him, admitting that he knows the official story is false and intends to use fear and unrest to change the city.

Torin speaks the word "death" before an unfamiliar statue of Sethis, restoring color, firelight, and a hidden treasury that had been phased out of existence. The companions recover glints and several strange relics: Ernan takes an ornate quill, Bjorn claims a heartbeat-like pocket watch that warns of ancient beings, Helena finds a jeweled scroll tube, and Vyr takes a glint capable of drawing in darkness. A shadowy guardian emerges from a box and remembers only that fear led him to betray Sethis during the end of days. The party calls him Rue. He can merge with shadows, but contact with Torin's light feels wrong and his presence alongside the entity within Normandy causes Normandy to bleed. Torin's farewell to Sethis restores part of the sanctuary and its offerings before the companions begin their ascent.

At the upper temple, wounded Phineas Moon and three enormous bears are caught in a collapse that drops the party into an unstable ice cavern. Whisper is pinned unconscious, falling stone and breaking ice divide the battlefield, and a vast creature moves beneath the frozen lake. The Panthex returns to challenge the greatest bear while the companions rescue one another through repeated injuries. Helena discovers a vanished sarcophagus containing a Veyan skeleton and feels an unexplained connection to it. Bjorn's rage turns upon Brill, but Brill reaches him through the fury, while Phineas tells Normandy to desecrate the tree and take the heart beneath its branches. The Panthex drives the alpha bear into the storm, the party escapes as the Temple of Sethis is buried, and the episode closes with Phineas dying among them beneath the gray morning sky.
