Episode 27: The Harbingers of Light | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 27

Episode 27 Synopsis

The Harbingers remain divided throughout the Gate of Sethis. Helena, Bjorn, and Aronin are trapped in a corridor where spinning blades sweep through the walls, stone pillars repeatedly crush the floor, and an arcane rune radiates fear. Normandy and Vyr remain sealed in a distant chamber with the nameless old wizard transported there before them, while Torrin and Whisper face the two temple guardians that awakened outside Sethis's sanctuary. Torrin leaves the goddess's offered boon untouched and joins Whisper against the constructs, which identify themselves as the sun and moon. Aronin damages the blade mechanism while Whisper struggles to unlock the steel door separating him from the trapped group. Helena reaches the fear rune but cannot deactivate it alone, leaving Normandy and Vyr to attack its interlocking sections from the opposite side.

Normandy discovers a mural puzzle and places representations of the sun and moon into their proper positions, causing an unseen mechanism elsewhere in the temple to react. The old wizard admits that a transpositional stone stranded him in the chamber and begs the pair to recover his parcel of runic stones from beyond a grate. Normandy obtains the bag, but one of its stones erupts into a fireball that blasts open the chamber's steel door. After the separated groups reunite and the fear rune is finally disabled, the wizard retrieves his stones and uses another to pass through the Gate of Sethis. He joins the battle against the guardians, but a lightning spell restores their strength instead of harming them. The Harbingers discover that paired-symbol puzzles throughout the temple send damaging pulses through the constructs. They activate images including sun and moon, dolphin and wave, rain and lightning, tree and leaf, oyster and pearl, cave and gemstone, and stars and owl while Torrin, Bjorn, Helena, Vyr, Aronin, and the wizard hold the guardians at bay.

Once the last paired image is placed, the remaining guardians collapse. A second puzzle system stands between the Harbingers and the newly revealed stairs beneath Sethis's sanctuary: stone faces containing three openings, only one of which can be pulled safely. The party correctly identifies the moon and later the leaf, but the other choices prove disastrous. Whisper chooses the dragon instead of lightning and loses an arm when the other openings snap shut. Normandy chooses tilled earth instead of the wave and suffers the same fate. Each correct answer lights another sconce, while an incorrect answer causes dormant gargoyles elsewhere in the temple to move. When the final lever is pulled, the sanctuary statue slides aside and exposes the descending stairs, but the remaining gargoyles shatter their stone shells and awaken. The wounded Harbingers end the episode surrounded by six new guardians, with Normandy and Whisper maimed and Aronin unconscious but stable.
