The Cataclysm

Overview

The Cataclysm was a devastating event believed to be caused by the removal of the gods' relics from their Great Temples. Below is a record of what happened when each of the gods' relics was removed, gathered from survivors of the events and passed down through the generations.

The Removal of the Relic of Tolgra, Goddess of the Sky and Heavens

When the Relic of Tolgra was removed from her temple, all the stars in the night sky were thrown into chaos. Some stars shifted only slightly, some started listlessly moving in circles, and some streaked across the sky then fell upon Tellus. The meteors caused widespread destruction but were generally mild compared to some of the other cataclysmic effects. The more devastating effect was from losing the known constellations in the night sky for navigation, telling time, divinations, and other sorts of magics derived from the stars.

The Removal of the Relic of Alleyar, the God of the Second Moon and Magic

When the Relic of Alleyar was removed from his temple, the most immediately notable thing was the second moon completely vanished. To this day, scholars don’t know if it was destroyed or is simply somewhere else. But more nefariously, after the relic's removal, the magics of the world began to act erratically and unreliably. Normally divine magics, such as magical healing and divinations, simply were unable to be performed anymore. Arcane and nature based magics grew wild and unstable. As such, the entire city of Brechilinn, which houses the Great Temple to Alleyar, became lost in the magical forests that normally protected it from harm.

The Removal of the Relic of Enir, Deity of Love and Connection

When the Relic of Enir was removed from their temple, a subtle darkness spread across the continent. Not the Shroudlands that we know and fear, but a collective darkness of the mind. People lost a bit of passion for their hobbies, were not as excited to visit their friends in the taverns, and argued with each other more than before.

The Removal of the Relic of Zetar, Goddess of War and Strife

When the Relic of Zetar was removed from her temple, similar to Enir, a collective subconscious effect was felt across the people of the continent. People grew meek and fearful, they fled when they should have fought, hid when they should have pressed the attack, and became subconsciously avoidant of all conflict.

The Removal of the Relic of Leana, Goddess of Justice and Order

When the Relic of Leana was removed from her temple, governing bodies across the Kingdom suddenly fell into chaos. The King himself and his cohort were nowhere to be found and without any central leadership, several local councils devolved into bitter squabbling over trivial matters when they should have been coming together during the crisis.

The Removal of the Relic of Delanara, Goddess of the First Moon and Nature

When the Relic of Delanara was removed from her temple, plants and animals across the continent started behaving in strange and horrifying ways. Trees uprooted themselves and lay siege to towns and villages, once beautiful flowers suddenly became carnivorous and thirsted for blood, and poisonous mushrooms began spewing toxic spores. At the same time, many animals began to act completely berserk, attacking their owners and caretakers, and others fled into forests and swamps never to be seen again.

The Removal of the Relic of Xeros, the Goddess of Knowledge and Craft

When the Relic of Xeros was removed from her temple, one of the most devastating events occurred, the Burning of the Great Libraries. The instant the relic was removed, without warning, the grand libraries across the continent caught fire and burned to the ground. The amount of knowledge and history that was lost in that moment is still unknown to this day. This stands as one of the most singular reasons as to why recovery of the Kingdom has been so slow and hard fought. The knowledge of how to do things, how to make things, how to figure things out, was now all dependent on the individual knowledge of the craftspeople, scholars, and historians who were left, many of whom perished trying to save the libraries.

The Removal of the Relic of Sikarr, God of Water and Life

When the Relic of Sikarr was removed from his temple, various bodies of water became putrefied and undrinkable. Fish and marine life died and washed up on shores across the continent, causing a toxic stench that resulted in many people fleeing the coastlines.

The Removal of the Relic of Orlene, God of Storms and Strength

When the Relic of Orlene was removed from his temple, a Great Hypercane swept across the southern part of the continent, causing widespread destruction and flooding. To this day, the rain in the city of Estilmor, where the Great Temple to Orlene resides, has not ceased for 111 years.

The Removal of the Relic of Navtix, God of Shadow and Trickery

When the Relic of Navtix was removed from his temple, nothing seemed to change on the continent. It is widely speculated that the Relic of Navtix that was taken was a fake, and the real Relic is still in its hidden temple. This theory is further corroborated by the fact that the Shadowgate was found to still be in operation in the Afterworld, although Navtix could no longer use it. Whatever the fake relic was, however, must have had some powerful magical properties to trick who or what removed the relic.

The Removal of the Relic of Miorr, God of Harvest and Home

When the Relic of Miorr was removed from his temple, crops that normally fed entire regions became infected with Blight, causing them to wither and rot on the vine. Root vegetables that were normally safe to eat suddenly became poisonous and sickened the populace.

The Removal of the Relic of Hila, Goddess of Beginnings and Change

When the Relic of Hila was removed from her temple, the effects were not immediately noticed but soon began to emerge. In the coming years and decades since its removal, livestock herds dwindled, wildlife was observed to be fewer and fewer in number, and families were finding it difficult to begin new life. Of all the devastation of the Cataclysm, this particular effect has had one of the most long-term impacts on recovery due to the slowly dwindling populations across Tellus.

The Removal of the Relic of Roxus, Goddess of Chaos and Growth

When the Relic of Roxus was removed from her temple, the balance of nature quickly became unchecked. Forests overgrew, pests became overabundant, and animals became much larger beasts than before. Large swathes of locusts and pestilence washed over the lands, consuming whatever was unluckily in its path.

The Removal of the Relic of Ykariot, God of Light and Fire

When the Relic of Ykariot was removed from his temple, a massive volcano arose from the central mountain range in between the cities of Starngard and Solkharah and exploded. Huge chunks of molten rock blasted across Starngard, destroying the tall spires there and laying waste to the city. The fire and ash from this explosion spread over much of the central continent and lava continues to pour out of it, surrounding the city of Solkharah.

The Removal of the Relic of Kildarim, God of Death and Endings

When the Relic of Kildarim was removed from his temple, the Dead Gates through which the souls of the departed traveled were left open and unguarded. The dead were free to wander back into the world of the living, and the newly dead found themselves with no shepherd to the Afterworld. Driven mad by their state and without any sense of self, the Bloodless became a scourge upon the land. Like a wildfire, they spread, at first in the outlying areas, the wilds, and frontiers. Then they pressed toward the cities and settlements, drawn toward life like a moth toward flame, ever seeking what they had lost.
