Castellum, the Fortress City, commands the grasslands of eastern Tellus. Its many walls remain unbreached around the citadel of the Great Temple of Zetar. The scattered arms and armor and forgotten burial mounds of battles long past are a testament to the city's unyielding nature. The smithies and armories of Castellum echo night and day as each and every one of the city's people consider the city's defense their personal responsibility. A great many humans and cinderkin can be counted among the fortress's inhabitants.
Castellum is the home of the Great Temple to Zetar, goddess of War and Strife.
The population of Castellum is primarily composed of Human and Cinderkin; although, refugees of all kinds have found their way to the city's walls.
Castellum is primarily comprised of large flat grasslands, much of which is littered with rusting swords, shields, and other relics from ancient battles. Burial mounds from wars long past dot the landscape. Weather is typically a constant overcast due to the trailing clouds funneled south by the Ashtail Mountains.
Castellum takes its inspiration and influence from medieval castle society, Arthurian knights, late Roman military towns, and Gondor from The Lord of the Rings, with attire often incorporating practical garb, armor of various kinds, or crafting accoutrements. Traditional medieval knights, heavily armored soldiers, blacksmiths and weaponsmiths abound.
Castellum's primary export during the Age of Calamity is weapons and armor, with some of the most prominent blacksmiths across the Enclaves churning out as much as possible for the defenses of the people of Tellus.
The governmental structure of Castellum is a military stratocracy headed by the Castellan. The fortress used to serve as the headquarters of the eastern garrison of Erden, and when the Kingdom fell, the legion stood to its post. As refugees began to take shelter in the walls, the office of the commander of the garrison began to take on more civic duties as a kind of military governor. Without a reigning monarch to appoint new Castellans, the local populace had to develop its own rules for succession. The result was a strict hierarchy based on accolades, honors, and military rank as determined by the assessments of superiors and peers. Only the priestship of Zetar stands outside of this hierarchy as a kind of watchdog to the actions of the Castellans and their subordinates.
Getting around Castellum and its lands is primarily done on horseback.
Castellum is not fallen. Castellan's primary defense is the fortification itself and the heavily militarized populace. During the Cataclysm, many refugees sought the safety of the Fortress, and its economy is thriving almost more than it was during times of peace.
