Description

Khemreset, the City of the Departed, was always a place of two worlds, with just as many tombs and graves as halls and homes. Countless faithful over the centuries sought final rest here in the desert to be close to the Great Temple of Kildarim. Once the site of many festivals to remember the dead and celebrate the living, Khemreset is now a shade of its former hallowed self. The large Stellari and Umbran communities that once dwelled within the writing-covered walls of the city dispersed in the Cataclysm, as the city was one of the first to fall to the Bloodless.

Demographics

The population of Khemreset was primarily composed of Stellari and Umbran before the Cataclysm.

Weather and Landscape

Khemreset is known for being an arid desert, with some of the highest temperatures on the continent. This landscape and weather provides the best environment for the preservation of the dead.

Aesthetic

Khemreset takes its inspiration and influence from the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean, particularly Classical Greece and Pharaonic Egypt. Khemreseti are distinguishable by their layers of simple fabrics like linen and cotton in hues of stark white or somber black. Shrouds to cover the face, sigils and designs drawn on the skin, and jewelry meant to ward off evil spirits are also common features.

Industry/Economy

Khemreset was known for production of incense, spices and other materials used in religious rites of all varieties; along with Solkharah, this city was a haven for scribes due to the demand for people to record histories and life stories.

Government

Before it's fall Khemreset was a theocracy, with High Priests and other religious officials guiding the decisions regarding the city and its domain, mediating disputes among its inhabitants, and upholding the laws and traditions handed down from one generation of faithful to the next. It was customary for the mortuary cults of Kildarim to carefully record the lives and deeds of the deceased and trace family connections to the living. In time this practice expanded to encompass other forms of record-keeping including those needed for administration. The offerings people dedicated to the pantheon or brought as grave goods for their departed relatives likewise evolved over the centuries into the temples becoming storehouses for all manner of resources which the priests doled out for projects or festivals or as needed. In this way, the keepers of the shrines and temples became caretakers of not just the dead as priests of Kildarim but also the living as leaders of the realm.

The people of Khemreset most often traveled via camelback across the desert.

Is this Enclave Fallen?

Khemreset is the most fallen of all the Enclaves, a complete nexus of death and decay due to the high concentration of departed that rested there prior to the Cataclysm.
