The Sewers

General Information

The Sewers of Altoria are a sprawling and labyrinthine system of tunnels that wind beneath the city, carrying waste and runoff away from the surface. Despite their intended purpose, the sewers have become a world unto themselves, filled with hidden dangers, strange creatures, and those who prefer to remain unseen. The air is thick with the smell of damp earth, decay, and stagnant water, and the walls are slick with moss and grime. The deeper sections of the sewers are largely unmapped, and rumors speak of forgotten chambers, lost treasures, and ancient tunnels that lead to places best left undisturbed.

The sewer system is a mix of old and new construction, with ancient brickwork giving way to newer, reinforced tunnels in some areas. Archways, sluice gates, and drainage channels crisscross the labyrinth, making navigation difficult without a guide. Some sections are well-maintained, with regular patrols and upkeep, while others are in complete disrepair, filled with collapsed walls, debris, and murky water. Hidden alcoves and side passages are common, providing refuge for those seeking to avoid detection, but they also serve as ambush points for the creatures and criminals that inhabit the depths.

The Atmosphere

The sewers are dark, damp, and dangerous, with an ever-present sense of unease. The sound of dripping water echoes endlessly, and the occasional scurrying of rats or splashes of unseen things add to the tension. The air is thick and difficult to breathe, making the environment even more oppressive. Despite the danger, the sewers are used by smugglers, thieves, and those looking to avoid the city’s watchful eyes. It’s a place where secrets are buried—sometimes literally—and where those willing to brave the depths might find hidden pathways, ancient relics, or even connections to the Veins below.

The People

The sewers are home to those who have nowhere else to go or who seek to operate outside the law. Criminals, outcasts, and the desperate make their homes in the shadows, carving out small territories in the more stable sections. Patrols from the city occasionally venture down to deal with infestations or repair damage, but they are few and far between. Those who frequent the sewers are typically well-armed and wary, knowing that danger could strike at any moment. It’s a harsh environment, but one where the resourceful can survive—if they’re lucky.
