In the second era under the Empire of Cinoh, the first Aomoya emperor had four legendary royal guards, who each wielded a unique elemental weapons. Tsuchi-o-Kiru is a part of this set of the Aomoya Elemental Guardians.
Tsuchi-o-Kiru was forged by the only woman among the four royal guards, a human warrior named Maishima Nanako. It was passed down through her family for generations until the fall of the empire and the rise of the Cinoh Shogunate. At that point, the salamander kami Shogo-sama took the weapon under his protection.
In 3E455, the monk Yama-no-Tsuki told the best dark joke and won Shogo-sama's approval, receiving the naginata to be used to defeat the hag kami Baba Setani.
