Episode 59: Catacomb of the Silence | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 59

Episode 59 Glossary

Characters

  • Silence: A winged Argylus and forgotten keeper of the catacomb beneath the Arcanium. She surrenders a Crystallic fragment to Bjorn and insists that she still retains her light.

  • Horatio Vinvestler: Joins the Harbingers in Cellus's dream, guides them through the Oblivion Orb, and accompanies them into the hidden catacomb beneath his tower.

  • Ariandre: Tends Vyr after her prolonged metaphysical absence and explains that the Crystalline Order has fallen asleep following Cellus's intervention.

  • Felsis: Opens his experimental Tear and leads the Harbingers through it to the northeastern land of the Wolf King.

  • Whisper: Resists the Oblivion Orb when it begins stealing memories of his loved ones. In Felonor, his ring and dagger cause the guards to recognize him as the returning Lord Valdemar.

  • Ernan: Travels with Whisper into Felonor and begins sensing buried memories of the city and the people who claim his brother has returned.

  • Kelci: A Felonor guard who rides a dire wolf and escorts the Harbingers into the city after recognizing Whisper's Valdemar sigil.

  • Lord Elseron Valdemar: The secluded ruler the Harbingers seek in Felonor. His representatives claim he has not appeared publicly for decades but agree to consider the party's request for an audience.

Gods and Religion

  • The Tangled One: The power worshipped within the House of Thedon. Her statue and the priest's account connect her to Felonor, the Valdemar child cast into the sea, and the Day of Longing.

  • Phaedras: The divine source associated with the Tome of Stars. Cellus states that the book cannot be destroyed while too many people continue dreaming and worshipping it into existence.

  • Sethis: The Goddess of Twilight and the Harbingers' possible guide to the Shadowed Path. Cellus does not replace her role in leading the party through Tyve's darkness.

Organizations and Societies

  • Harbingers of Light: Are named champions of Cellus, remove their forbidden memories, recover another Crystallic fragment, and travel through the Tear to Felonor.

  • Crystalline Order: Falls into a forbidden slumber after threatening Vyr. The Harbingers erase their memories of the green eyes so Cellus can eventually awaken the order without renewing the conflict.

  • The Arcanium: Horatio's research organization and the base from which the Harbingers enter the catacomb and later pass through Felsis's experimental Tear.

  • People of Felonor: A prosperous society living beneath perpetual twilight. Their wolf heraldry, guarded plateau, and reverence for the Valdemar bloodline suggest a long and isolated history.

  • House of Thedon: An ancient religious house within Felonor. Its priest welcomes Whisper as the returned Valdemar child and preserves a statue of the Tangled One.

Creatures and Nature

  • Cellus: The primordial Dragon of Dreams. He places the Crystalline Order into a forbidden slumber, declares the Harbingers his champions, and wants the Ithelion restored.

  • Argylus: Primeval beings associated with powerful ideas and forces. Silence retains wings and part of her light, distinguishing her from the more completely fallen Argylus encountered by the Harbingers before.

  • Dire Wolves: Large wolves ridden by Felonor's guards. They serve alongside the city's soldiers and reinforce its ancient wolf heraldry.

  • Felonor's Sacred Tree: A great tree with lavender-colored flowers growing at the center of the city. Its scent awakens indistinct memories in Whisper and subtly changes the colors around it.

Items and Technology

  • Oblivion Orb: Horatio's memory-removing device. The Harbingers use it to forget the green eyes, but it nearly strips Whisper of every memory connecting him to the people he loves.

  • Crystallic: The artifact being reassembled by the Harbingers. Silence gives Bjorn the fragment she guarded, and it immediately joins Torrin's existing pieces.

  • Torrin's Compass: Reveals the hidden catacomb entrance and tracks the Crystallic. After the fragment is recovered, it points south by southwest below the Arcanium but toward the Tear from the upper chamber.

  • The Tear: Felsis's experimental portal built from a metal arch. It can pull travelers apart if they fail to preserve their physical forms, but it successfully carries the Harbingers to the northeastern coast.

  • Whisper's Crossbow: A weapon touched by Cellus within the dream. It dissolves into stars before returning to Whisper, but its altered nature cannot yet be identified.

  • Valdemar Ring and Dagger: Wolf-marked heirlooms carried by Whisper. Felonor's guards recognize their sigil and proclaim him the returning Lord Valdemar.

  • Light Wand: A wand created for Whisper that allows him to cast light. He uses it upon his crossbow while traveling through the dark forest toward Felonor.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Shared Dream: Cellus draws the sleeping Harbingers into the same dream, allowing them to witness Vyr's rescue and speak together within his cosmic realm.

  • Forbidden Slumber: The sleep Cellus imposes upon the Crystalline Order. He suggests the order can be awakened after the Harbingers forget the green eyes.

  • Starving Darkness: A black and hungry power that notices Vyr after her journey between realms. Cellus warns that it now knows her scent.

  • Phylactery of the Dark Scepter: Cellus identifies the Dark Scepter as a vessel preserving an unknown life or soul. The identity and number of beings contained within it remain uncertain.

  • Argylus Light: The pale radiance surrounding Silence. It is beautiful, maddening, and harmful to the soul, yet it also indicates that she has not completely fallen.

  • Tear Travel: A form of portal magic that disassembles and reincorporates travelers. The Harbingers must resist being pulled apart while crossing between the Arcanium and the northeastern coast.

Locations and Realms

  • Cellus's Dream Realm: A cosmic space of moving glass, lakes of stars, and shared dreams where Cellus names the Harbingers as his champions.

  • Catacomb of Silence: A concealed chamber beneath the Arcanium protected by an acid trap. Silence guards a Crystallic fragment there among living prisoners sealed inside floating glass.

  • Arcanium Tower: The hidden tower from which the Harbingers descend into the catacomb and later travel through the Tear.

  • Felonor: The City of the Wolf, built upon a northeastern coastal plateau beneath perpetual twilight. Its people recognize Whisper's Valdemar sigil and believe a lost lord has returned.

  • House of Thedon: The ancient sanctuary where the Harbingers are lodged in Felonor. Its priest connects Whisper to the Day of Longing and the Tangled One.

  • Northeastern Coast: A dark pine-covered region beyond the Harbingers' known map. Felsis's Tear opens within overgrown ruins a short distance from Felonor.

History and Lore

  • Silence's Vigil: Silence has remained beneath the Arcanium as keeper of the catacomb and guardian of a Crystallic fragment. She claims continued allegiance to her order and insists that she has not lost her light.

  • Return of Lord Valdemar: Whisper's family sigil causes Felonor's guards to identify him as a lost member of the ruling bloodline. The city begins spreading word of his return before he reaches the palace.

  • Day of Longing: An old Felonor observance during which the Valdemar child was cast into the sea. The House of Thedon treats Whisper's arrival as the return of that lost child.

  • Founding of Felonor: Felonor's oral tradition claims that an ancient ancestor climbed the coastal rocks with a sea witch, drove back the sea and darkness, and accepted the howling of wolves as an omen.
