Episode 69: Concept of a Plan | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 69

Episode 69 Glossary

Characters

  • Velric: A Kahren'Vare captive introduced under the name Kethrick Voss. He admits that he was stealing power when the Shadow Claws captured him, rejects the Watchers' influence, destroys his mask, and pledges to support Helena's attempt to unite the clans.

  • Bjor Kavaar: Bjork's mother and chief of the Shadow Claws. She releases Velric into Helena's custody as a gesture of trust but withholds her warriors until the Harbingers prove their strength.

  • Bjork Kavaar: Accompanies Helena back to the Harbingers, defends the destruction of the Helm of Skjold, and is thrown to the ground by Bjorn during their confrontation. Ernan's attempt to comfort him begins a new fatherly attachment.

  • The Escaped Youth: An unnamed young survivor from the Chained Fortress. His family escaped aboard a cart from Vilk but remained magically trapped near the fortress. His parents died in the cave, his brother was recaptured, and he survived alone until the Harbingers found him.

  • Myles: Overseer of the Eastern Foundry. He appears healthy, affluent, and free from the Chain's direct control. Believing Helena to be an inspector, he explains how terror and trauma prepare victims for enthrallment.

  • Cecil: Secretly departs Keph along the dark path revealed by Sethis. Ned Flan'Deres, Lendo Malorian, Cass, Trash King, Snake Eye Joe, and Th'Marck accompany her, while an unidentified eighth traveler follows.

Gods and Religion

  • The Watchers' Masters: Unidentified powers beyond the mountains from whom the antlered Watchers and the Kahren'Vare draw magic. Velric claims that he siphoned their power without becoming their servant.

  • Phaedras: Divine power served by Yurias Castus. Yurias identifies himself as a Watcher who resisted the corruption of his people and continues carrying the Tome of Stars.

  • Skjold: The ancestral identity around which Bjorn's people rallied. The destruction of Skjold's Helm intensifies the dispute over whether Skjold should remain embodied by a single leader or belong to everyone who chooses freedom.

Organizations and Societies

  • Kahren'Vare: A lost barbarian clan that draws power from the Watchers' masters. Velric warns Helena that his people may exploit or betray her even as he agrees to help unite them with the other clans.

  • Shadow Claws: Clan led by Bjor Kavaar. They release Velric but will not march with Helena until the Harbingers demonstrate sufficient strength.

  • The Chain: Draxus Kael's system of magical domination and social control. Its power binds workers, soldiers, the dead, and even attempted escapees, but the prosperous second circle reveals that some residents serve it willingly.

  • Harbingers of Light: Helena, Yurias, Torrin, Vyr, Whisper, Bjorn, Bjork, and Ernan enter the mines beneath the Chained Fortress in search of the final Crystallic fragment.

  • Cecil's Company: Cecil, Ned Flan'Deres, Lendo Malorian, Cass, Trash King, Snake Eye Joe, and Th'Marck leave Keph on a separate mission, followed by an unidentified traveler.

Creatures and Nature

  • The Antlered Watcher: The same or a closely related creature encountered by Helena in the forest. It attacks the Shadow Claws, drains life from its victims, and demands Helena's light so it can return home before Velric repels it.

  • Shrykes: Flying mounts revealed to be hippogriffs from Teldoroth transformed by a powerful darkness. Ordinary curse-breaking magic is insufficient to restore them.

  • The Restored Hippogriff: A Shryke returned to its original blue-feathered form when Helena's light breaks the darkness surrounding it. The remaining Shrykes instinctively gather around it.

  • The Mine Amalgamation: An enormous undead creature assembled from multiple corpses and imprisoned behind a portcullis near the eastern mineshaft. The Harbingers force it back before it can escape.

  • The Imprisoned Dragon: A dragon sensed by Helena beyond one of the skull-marked passages. Its identity and condition remain unknown.

Items and Technology

  • Velric's Mask: A white porcelain mask given to the Kahren'Vare through their connection to Horatio Vinvestler. Velric uses it to channel the Watchers' power, then destroys it with Helena's light to sever that bond.

  • Helena's Light: The divine light carried within Helena's necklace. Velric uses part of it to free himself from the Watchers and restore a Shryke, leaving Helena with less light than before.

  • Helm of Skjold Standard: A replica of the destroyed helm fixed to a banner. Helena and Bjork present it as a new symbol of shared identity, but Bjorn believes it cannot replace the ancestral object around which Keph rallied.

  • Torrin's Compass: A device linked to the Crystallic. It guides the Harbingers through the mines and points back toward Myles and the Eastern Foundry after the party enters the Chained Fortress.

  • Mining Elevators: Vertical platforms descending deep beneath the mountains and rising into the Chained Fortress. The Harbingers use them to pass from the eastern mineshaft into the mines, the foundry, and the outer circle.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Velric's Severance: Helena's light destroys Velric's mask and breaks his connection to the Watchers. The ritual strips away much of his magic but restores some of his physical vitality.

  • The Shryke Curse: A darkness powerful enough to transform Teldoroth's hippogriffs into Shrykes. Helena's light can reverse the change, but Torrin's ordinary Remove Curse cannot.

  • The Chain's Boundary: The escaped youth and his family could flee the fortress but were supernaturally prevented from passing beyond the nearby road.

  • The Chain's Enthrallment: Myles explains that fear, trauma, and spiritual collapse make victims easier to dominate while causing less damage to their minds. Some victims eventually become little more than expendable bodies.

  • Voluntary Service to the Chain: The second circle proves that direct enthrallment is not universal. Some affluent inhabitants retain their faculties while profiting from the suffering that sustains Draxus Kael's war machine.

Locations and Realms

  • Chained Fortress: Draxus Kael's immense mountain stronghold, divided into three concentric circles and protected by a wall built into the Sheer Peaks. The final Crystallic fragment lies somewhere within it.

  • Iron Lake: A vast lake bordering the Chained Fortress. Waste from the outer circle's furnaces has turned its water into polluted muck.

  • Southern Cave: Refuge where the Harbingers find the escaped youth and his dead family. The Chain's boundary prevented them from fleeing farther.

  • Eastern Mines: A hidden approach beneath the fortress containing explosive defenses, an imprisoned undead amalgamation, enslaved miners, a Rusticulum overseer, and sealed passages leading toward a dragon.

  • Eastern Foundry: Myles's smelting complex above the mines. It connects to the outer circle and overlooks the prosperous district beyond.

  • Outer Circle: Furnace district containing thousands of enslaved laborers who smelt metal and manufacture weapons for Draxus Kael.

  • Second Circle: Affluent district of white homes, art, culture, and prosperity inhabited at least partly by people who benefit from the Chain without being enthralled.

  • Kvash: The tallest mountain in Nabell, visible beyond the Chained Fortress among the blade-like Sheer Peaks.

History and Lore

  • The Corruption of the Shrykes: The Shrykes were once hippogriffs from Teldoroth before the darkness connected to the Watchers transformed them.

  • Velric's False Identity: The Shadow Claws knew the Kahren'Vare captive as Kethrick Voss, but he reveals his true name only after accepting Helena's alliance.

  • The Fortress's Three Circles: The Chained Fortress is arranged as concentric social and industrial layers. The outer circle contains the war machine, the second holds an affluent population, and the inner circle remains unknown.

  • Weapons of the Chain: The escaped youth claims that Draxus Kael places living people inside some of his weapons and takes other captives into the inner circles.

  • Carts from Vilk: Regular supply transports connect Vilk to the Chained Fortress. The escaped youth's family used one of these carts to flee before the Chain trapped them near the road.
