Bjorn: Returns to Norn for the first time in twenty-five years, finds a message directing him toward the Starren Woods, honors his wolf Niels, and answers the Path of Chiefs alone.
Torrin: Helps explore the upper Twilight Temple, uses Daylight to end the Shryke trial, and protects the restorative apple after Bjorn begins the chief's path.
Whisper: Discovers how to reset and repair the tower mechanism connected to the Eye, restoring the elevator after repeated failures.
Ernan: Reacts to Norn with unexplained peace and familiarity but denies having visited. He apologizes to Bjorn without explaining why.
The Watcher: A disembodied being of a forgotten race who presides over Karn. He administers the ceremonial trial, grants the Harbingers their Shrykes, and warns them against entering the Sheer Peaks.
Tamarack Vale: Remains at the Twilight Temple with the refugees and children after helping activate its elevator. The Harbingers place him among those responsible for protecting the sanctuary and keeping Solitude company.
Wylas Velpa: The wealthy Gavran trader who previously demanded the Eye of the Twilight Temple. Looking through the glint reminds Whisper of Wylas's hostile desire to possess it.

Path of Chiefs: A traditional Nornian pilgrimage through the mountains. Bjorn believes he must answer its summons alone because he was the last chief of Norn.
Nornian Ancestors: The generations of chiefs, warriors, and families commemorated through Norn's ruined murals, tapestries, burial places, and mountain path.
White-Robed Woman: A figure visible only to Bjorn beyond the entrance to the Path of Chiefs. Her appearance confirms that the summons is meant for him alone.

Harbingers of Light: Explore the Twilight Temple's upper tower, survive the Watcher's ritual, receive Shryke mounts, and accompany Bjorn back to Norn.
The Vey: The people depicted in the temple mural beneath the claws of a Shryke-like creature. Their architecture and writing identify the Karn rune, although Karn itself is not Veyan.
Nornians: Bjorn's former people, who built a civilization of multiple villages beneath the mountains before the Chain forced their flight to New Norn.
The Chain: The power that destroyed Norn and absorbed those who remained behind. The Harbingers suspect that the Chain began as a smaller religious movement before changing into its present conquering force.

Shrykes: Enormous feathered and furred flying creatures that blur against reality when touched. Seven bond with the Harbingers after the Watcher's trial and carry them across Tyve at extraordinary speed.
Mountain Dragon: A tremendously powerful dragon sensed within a cavern in the Sheer Peaks. The Harbingers retreat rather than challenge it while injured and unprepared.
Cloud-Bound Creature: An unseen being large enough to move the cloud layer above Tyve. The Harbingers glimpse its passage while flying near the clouds but cannot identify it.
White Flowers of Norn: Blossoms covering the abandoned valley. Their petals lead Bjorn toward the Path of Chiefs, and new flowers bloom after he crosses its threshold.

Eye of the Twilight Temple: An enormous, exceptionally pure glint mounted atop the temple's tower. At twilight, it projects lines of light toward Aurorius Falls.
Karn Rune: A heavy Veyan gateway stone recovered from the upper temple. It fits into a submerged second arch and opens the portal to Karn.
Shryke Whistle: A pearl-like whistle granted by the Watcher that can call the bonded Shrykes. The Harbingers give it to Bjorn before he begins the Path of Chiefs.
Ceremonial Draught: A sweet red liquid brewed within Karn. It heightens the drinkers' senses but also causes nausea, paranoia, confusion, and unpredictable behavior during the Shryke trial.
Bjorn's Stone: A personal stone found beneath Bjorn's old bed. It bears the messages “We are lost from each other” and “Starren Woods,” suggesting that someone important survived Norn's fall.
Helvegen: Bjorn's all-blade. It begins glowing as he enters the Path of Chiefs, though Bjorn does not notice the change.

Eye Convergence: At twilight, light passing through the Eye forms spokes that converge north by northwest toward Aurorius Falls.
Shryke Bond: Contact with a Shryke causes both creature and rider to blur against reality. The bond allows the mounts to move at tremendous speed but still requires their riders to earn trust and learn control.
Karn Trial: The Watcher's ritual combines the ceremonial draught with a confrontation against a dominant Shryke. The trial appears to test whether visitors can hold their ground without surrendering to paranoia or fear.
Twilight Gateway: The Karn rune activates a second arch hidden beneath the portal basin, expanding the known structure of the Veyan portal network.

Twilight Temple: The mountain sanctuary containing the Eye, the Karn rune, Solitude, the portal network, and the refugees rescued by the Harbingers.
Karn, the Link: A vast iron tower hidden deep within the Sheer Peaks. It contains the Watcher's cauldron, numerous alcoves, hanging chains, and exits used by the Shrykes.
Aurorius Falls: A distant waterfall within the Sheer Peaks. The Eye's rays converge in its direction, suggesting that something important lies there.
Norn: Bjorn's abandoned homeland beneath the mountains. Its villages are ruined, but the hall of chiefs, ancestral art, Niels's grave, and the Path of Chiefs remain.
Starren Woods: A forest named upon the stone left for Bjorn. The message suggests that someone separated from him may be waiting there.
Sheer Peaks: The immense mountain range containing Karn, Aurorius Falls, the dragon's cave, and the Path of Chiefs.

Fall of Norn: The Chain's attack forced Bjorn to evacuate his people twenty-five years earlier. Some Nornians remained and submitted, but no recent inhabitants are visible when Bjorn returns.
Vey and the Shrykes: A mural in the Twilight Temple depicts Veyan warriors raising their spears beneath the claws of a great creature resembling a Shryke, indicating an ancient relationship not yet understood.
Watcher of Karn: The Watcher belongs to a forgotten race and has not received visitors in an age. He preserves the Shrykes and grants them only to people who survive his ritual.
Return to the Chief's Path: Bjorn finally approaches the pilgrimage he never completed while ruling Norn. The wind, the white-robed woman, Helvegen, and the flowers all respond to his decision.
