Characters
Helena: Vanari seeker whose childhood lesson connects the Ithelion with truth. After the fracture, the light she carried in Stefon's vial is gone.
Jezaphit: Helena and Stefon's mother, present during the childhood teaching beneath Tel'Dorath's golden and silver trees.
Sybil: Helena and Stefon's father. He teaches that Solarus's enduring gift is truth and warns that truth obscured by history becomes a profound darkness.
Stefon Tevras: Helena's brother, shown as a child listening beside her to the story of the Unison, Solarus, and the Ithelion.
Brill: Rejoins the Harbingers after surviving Xandra's battle with the Tangled One and the deadly aftermath in the Shattered Isles.
Xandra: Powerful outsider whose confrontation with the Tangled One devastates the surviving ship near the Shattered Isles.
Madame Iris: Proprietor of the Blooming Petal who awakens in the caravan with Lily and no clear memory of leaving Piln.
Lily: Young woman important to Whisper who emerges from the missing weeks alive but confused and suffering from a headache.
Silas Palligref: Former Gavran captain who wakes leading a horse with damaged armor and the inexplicable feeling that Whisper did something honorable for him.
Lendo Malorian: Xandra's guardian. A Rusticulum chain takes control of him until the Harbingers sever it.
False Arcanium Elder: Low-ranking survivor who steals the identity and possessions of the person meant to carry the Arcanium's knowledge to safety.
Gods and Religion
Solarus: God of Light and first note of the Unison. Vanari tradition says his perfect radiance shattered primordial darkness and left the Ithelion in Nabell.
The Unison: First chorus of creation, described as the soul of the world, the soul of dead gods, and the notes from which existence formed.
Ithelion: Undying remnant of Solarus's touch upon Nabell. Helena's father interprets its light as truth itself.
The Tangled One: Sea goddess incarnated as Aggie whose clash with Xandra destroys most of the vessel and crew left near the Shattered Isles.
The Hidden Father: Secret leader who gave Whisper a black dagger and instructed him to use it against a man marked by chains.
Sethis: Goddess of Twilight whose domain is reflected in the unnatural dusk spreading after Piln's light disappears.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Emerge from Piln with two weeks missing, altered bodies, displaced allies, and no knowledge of what occurred around the Ithelion.
Arcanium: Secret order studying light and the Ithelion. Its apparent remnants follow a contingency intended to preserve essential knowledge after Piln's light fails.
The Chain: Power represented by the black-armored Rusticulum that invades Gavra's obelisk and binds defenders to its will.
Vanari: Helena's people, who preserve ancient teachings about the Unison, Solarus, truth, purity, and the origin of the Ithelion.
Dread Stalkers: Pirates and former associates traveling with the fractured caravan or returning from the Shattered Isles, including Snakeye Joe and survivors of Xandra's crew.
Recast: People altered by generations beneath Piln's light. The apparent loss of the Ithelion leaves their future uncertain.
Stewards of Gavra: Marquis Cassiandros's government and guards, now trying to secure the city as darkness advances.
Creatures and Nature
Rusticulum: Heavily armored Chain warrior that emerges from the obelisk, controls victims with hooked chains, and wields an enormous sword.
Darkness Horde: Unseen creatures announced by distant howls as the storm and tangible darkness close around Gavra.
Vyr's Bat: Familiar that carries a message from the Harbingers to Brill and helps him learn that they traveled through a portal toward Gavra.
Shattered Starlight: Star-like remnants embedded in the ruined ship after Xandra and the Tangled One release cataclysmic power against each other.
Advancing Storm: Massive wall of cloud and darkness moving from the east after Piln's light disappears.
Pallid Twilight: Cold, diminished condition spreading across Scarsden without the Ithelion's radiance.
Items and Technology
Helena's Vial: Vessel left by Stefon and formerly filled with light. It remains around Helena's neck but is empty after the fracture.
Vyr's X-Crystal: Crystal through which Vyr channels her essence magic. It is cracked during the erased events in Piln but remains functional.
Crystallic Fragments: Joined pieces carried by Torrin before Piln. They are missing when he awakens after the two-week gap.
Arcanium Elder's Book: Record containing knowledge chosen to survive the loss of Piln. Brill recovers it from the false elder's body.
Arcanium Medallion: Insignia stolen by the impostor from the person selected to fulfill the preservation contingency.
Rune Key: Device used to align and open the Sanctorum Obelisque. The Rusticulum crushes it after crossing through.
Black Dagger: Weapon given to Whisper by the Hidden Father. It melts into a deadly liquid after striking the Rusticulum and nearly kills Whisper as well.
Lendo's Holy Weapon: Golden light Lendo places upon Helena's bow before being taken by the Rusticulum's chain.
Magic and Cosmology
The Fracture: Event surrounding Piln that breaks memory and the apparent flow of time. The affected travelers experience two missing weeks while others live through them normally.
Erased Memory: The Harbingers retain only fragments of reaching toward the Ithelion, the unknown apology, and bodily evidence of events they cannot remember.
Ithelion Radiance: Light that illuminates Scarsden, powers its defenses, and holds back something within the surrounding darkness.
Arcanium Preservation Contingency: Emergency plan intended to place select people or knowledge beyond the reach of a catastrophe involving Piln.
Chain Enslavement: Rusticulum magic manifested as physical chains that hook into victims and compel them to attack their allies.
Liquefied Dagger Poison: Unknown substance released by the Hidden Father's dagger. It consumes the Rusticulum and then tries to spread through Whisper.
Twilight Purification: Torrin draws the poison from Whisper when divine magic tied to sunlight struggles beneath the growing darkness.
Temporal Disjunction: Brill remembers the intervening weeks, while the fractured travelers perceive Piln's extinguishing as a recent event despite having traveled for fourteen days.

Tel'Dorath: Vanari homeland beneath cosmic skies and trees of gold and silver, where Helena receives her childhood lesson about light and truth.
Piln: Lighthouse city holding the Ithelion. Its aurora fractures before the Harbingers lose two weeks of memory and awaken far away.
Wintere Woods: Forest near which the fractured caravan awakens during its return toward Gavra.
Gavra: Capital of Scarsden, now gripped by fear, civil unrest, and darkness after the loss of Piln's light.
Sanctorum Obelisque: Ancient portal chamber above Gavran Castle, used by the Arcanium's emergency contingency and breached by the Chain.
The Shattered Isles: Region where Brill, Xandra, and the remaining crew survive the Tangled One's attack and later fight through devastated settlements.
Scarsden: Island illuminated by Piln and left in cold twilight when the Ithelion disappears.
Dio Ostium: Sealed gateway beyond which another great source of light is believed to exist, though no known route through it remains open.
History and Lore
First Note of Creation: Vanari tradition names Solarus as the first divine note to emerge from the Unison and break the infinite darkness.
Solarus Touches Nabell: The god's dangerously perfect radiance fractures the world and leaves an inextinguishable remnant called the Ithelion.
Vanari Meaning of Light: Sybil teaches that light is truth and that lies about the past create a darkness more dangerous than simple ignorance.
Disappearance at Piln: The Harbingers reach toward the Ithelion, hear an apology, and lose all memory of the following two weeks.
