Characters
Whisper: Recovers the memory of escaping the mainland as a four-year-old while Ernan remained behind. He accepts Ernan as his brother and rejects the opportunity to flee Tyve before confronting Draxus Cale.
Ernan: Whisper's older brother and a former servant of the Chain. He dies to break the Chain's control, returns through the Dreg'Damor spirits, and reveals his role in the events at Piln and his belief that the brothers are trapped in a repeating cycle.
Bjorn: Leads the Nornians during the destruction of the land bridge. In the present, he returns to Norn, reunites with Bjork's mother, and discovers that he has a son.
Bjork: Bjorn's adult son, raised among the Shadow Claws. He initially rejects his father but agrees to accompany him and judge whether Bjorn deserves to return.
Bjork's Mother: A former Shadow Claw chief and Bjorn's long-separated wife. She protected Whisper during the destruction of the land bridge, later entrusted him to Graham, and raised Bjork after the Nornians rejected them.
Draxus Cale: The master of the Chain who destroys the ancient land bridge with his birthright sword. Ernan claims that Draxus has reached his full power and seeks to force open the Dios Ostium.
Magna Neva: Protects the young Whisper during the evacuation and ensures that he is eventually placed in Graham's care.
Normandy Borthal: Helps guard the resurrected Ernan and presses him for information about the Chain, the Chained City, and the repeating lives he shares with Whisper.
The Librarian: Deciphers the recovered Traeus records and suggests that they describe an ancient drowned civilization with a clue hidden in Karn.
Gods and Religion
Dreg'Damor Spirits: Seven ancestral spirits summoned through Helena's orb. They agree to resurrect Ernan and restore him without the visible scars of the Chain.
Skjold: The ancestral chief whose helm Bjorn carries after completing the chief's journey. Bjork's mother treats the helm as a gift and a responsibility rather than proof that Bjorn has fulfilled his duties.
Yulah and the Dragon Lords: Ancestral powers invoked by the Nornians as they prepare to die defending the evacuation at the land bridge.
Organizations and Societies
Harbingers of Light: Resurrect Ernan, learn the truth of his service to the Chain, and choose to continue opposing Draxus rather than escape Tyve.
The Chain: Draxus Cale's army and system of supernatural enslavement. Its members remain connected to Draxus, who can watch through them and destroy them when they resist.
Nornians: Bjorn's displaced clan. Approximately 450 survivors escape the destruction of the land bridge aboard ships or after being pulled from the water.
Shadow Claws: A secretive barbarian people of the Staring Woods. Bjork's mother formerly led them, and Bjork has been raised within their traditions.
Creatures and Nature
Shrikes: Fast winged mounts summoned by Bjorn after his return to Norn. They carry him into the Staring Woods and will transport Bjorn and Bjork back toward Karn.
Stones of the Old Gods: Colossal statues of ancient chiefs and rulers guarding Tyve's southern passage. Draxus topples one into the battlefield during the Chain's assault.
Items and Technology
Resurrection Orb: A single-use magical orb carried by Helena. It summons the Dreg'Damor spirits, cracks after they accept her request, and restores Ernan to life.
Draxus's Birthright Sword: A red weapon associated with the fallen Paladarium. Draxus drives it into the ground to rupture the land bridge and seal the southern mainland.
Death's Kiss: A lethal poison once carried by Whisper. He intends to obtain more of it and use it against Draxus Cale.
Skjold's Helm: The ancestral helm Bjorn recovers through the chief's journey. Bjork's mother returns it to him while warning that its gift will test him.
Alchemical Recipe Book: A surviving Nornian text recovered by Bjorn from the ruins of the elders' building. It contains recipes he hopes to use for potions, acids, and other alchemical tools.
Ernan's Vials: Containers holding stolen light, including the light taken from Piln and Helena. The Harbingers recover them from Ernan after his death.
Magic and Cosmology
The Chain's Bond: A supernatural link that grants power, suppresses identity, allows Draxus to observe his servants, and punishes resistance with death. Ernan believes death is the only way to break it.
Ernan's Resurrection: The Dreg'Damor spirits restore Ernan after his self-immolation. His missing scars suggest the Chain's visible hold may be gone, though the spirits warn that the Harbingers are gambling on that belief.
Repeating Lives: Ernan believes that he and Whisper have lived, died, and returned on Tyve more than once. Their identities may be two pieces of a larger cycle centered upon the Chained City.
Light and Joy: Ernan reports that hope, friendship, and joy weakened the Chain's voice within him, allowing his attachment to the Harbingers to compete with Draxus's control.
Locations and Realms
The Land Bridge: An ancient passage connecting Tyve's mainland to the southeastern archipelagos. Draxus destroys it while the Nornians attempt to escape.
Norn: The ruined homeland of the Nornians. Bjorn revisits its remains after completing the chief's journey and recovers flowers and an alchemical text.
Twilight Temple: The sanctuary where Ernan dies, is resurrected, and reveals his history with the Chain.
Chained City: Draxus Cale's stronghold upon the mainland. Ernan describes it as a place of torture where Whisper and Ernan hold an unexplained royal importance.
Dios Ostium: The Door of God around which Draxus built his fortress. The Chain repeatedly tears apart captives who fail to open it.
Staring Woods: The forest containing the Shadow Claws and the grove where Bjorn reunites with his wife and meets Bjork.
Traeus: An ancient city or continent believed to have sunk beneath the sea. Its relationship to Teldoroth and Tyve remains uncertain.
Teldoroth: Helena's lost lesser isle, which vanished thousands of years ago. The Librarian's findings suggest that it may be connected to Traeus.
History and Lore
Destruction of the Land Bridge: Draxus Cale uses his birthright sword to rupture the ancient passage, killing hundreds of fleeing Nornians and preventing escape by land.
Separation of Whisper and Ernan: Whisper reaches a Nornian ship while Ernan is stranded on the coast. The brothers lose one another for twenty-five years.
Truth of Piln: Ernan admits that he stole Piln's light, killed Martha, concealed the event by altering the Harbingers' memories, and continued manipulating the group under the Chain's command.
Reunion of Bjorn's Family: Bjorn returns to the Shadow Claw grove and learns that his wife survived, bore Bjork, and raised their son without him.
