Valence Avorinth: Twice-crowned king of the Vey. He orders the Ithelion fractured and entrusts its lone shard to Torin as a final safeguard.
Torin's Daughter: Young Veyan sent north across the Sequestered Sea with the Ithelion shard. She intends to find Tilda and bring help from Tarath.
Torin's Partner: Pleads against sending their daughter away, then kills Torin after claiming his death is the price of her safety.
Ellie: Sixteen-year-old seamstress from the wharfs whom secret priests attempt to purify by extracting her darkness. She survives after Bjorn interrupts the beam.
Selendra Cassiandros: Marquis of Gavra. She accepts evidence against the Velpins and commissions the group to undermine the Felricks or secure two loyal houses.
Silas Palagraph: Former Gavran captain who has rallied advisors, generals, and a small army for a northern voyage toward the mainland.
Philgo: Gavran official who prepares eight writs of passage and escorts the group to its monetary reward.
Oslo: Elderly Gavran treasurer who provides eight bags containing fifty gold each.
Al Shemist: Alchemy proprietor who sells the company healing potions, alchemist's fire, and a size-reducing potion.
Nitro: Eccentric fireworks maker who sells the group boom powder, a phosphorus display, and a dangerous glycyrin bomb.
Mojaito: Nitro's monkey, sent to search for the ledgers Vyr temporarily steals.
Ilk: Name chosen by the Black Worm's keeper. He says his acolytes serve a greater purpose and that they will meet the party again.
Rita: Crepe-shop regular and Kyle's mother. Her gossip connects the ouroboros necklace to her son's former mystical order.
Kyle: Former Arcanium member now serving Eth under Father Patches. He identifies the ouroboros and describes the order's attempt to purify dark winds.
Charlie: Glister distributor near the wharf district who admits dealing with the Felrick family and places two portions with the group on credit.
Aggie: Awakens aboard the disabled Lily's Song after everyone else is shown unconscious.
Gods and Religion
Ithelion: Living divine light fractured by Veyan machines. The missing shard begins a slow death that threatens the world if the light is not restored.
The Tangled One: Goddess invoked by the masked priests while they extract Ellie's darkness through the way gate.
Eth: Goddess of New Beginnings. Civil unrest has turned her worship into a rallying cry, and her cathedral is defaced with the words "Eth is alive."
The Teller: Enemy erasing the Vey not merely by war, but by making their people repeat the story of their own destruction.
Black Worm: Mysterious creature whose secretions carry Torin beyond the veil and expose him to a vision about the dead, the Ithelion, and the mainland.
Organizations and Societies
Vey: Ancient people who weave glass into art and illusion. In desperation, they transform their craft into machines that attack the Ithelion.
House Cassiandros: Ruling house of Gavra, threatened by unrest among the civil houses while much of the city's military is absent.
Velpan Trading Company: House aligned with Selendra but also implicated in a plot against her. Normandy's recovered documents give the Marquis leverage against it.
Felrick Family: Powerful house controlling the glister trade and one of the principal threats to Selendra's rule.
Yore and Gander: Unchartered shipping concern sharing the Arcanium's ouroboros symbol. Its relationship to the Arcanium is stronger than a normal commercial partnership but remains incompletely defined.
Arcanium: Mystical order formerly headquartered in Gavra's clock tower. Kyle says it used dark winds in an attempt to purify their source and eventually people.
Assassin's Guild: Organization serving the Black Queen. Its messenger announces a seventy-two-hour reprieve for Whisper and the company.
Secret Purification Priests: Masked religious faction using Gavra's sealed pillar to remove darkness from unwilling subjects in the Tangled One's name.
The Chain: Mainland religious power blamed by Silas for the plague's return. New Norn remembers the Chain as the force that massacred their people.
Trade and Performer Guilds: Potential allies Selendra suggests if direct proof against the Felricks cannot be obtained.
Creatures and Nature
Black Worm: Lamprey-like creature found on a vessel from the distant east. Its apparent secretions create visions and may feed on a subject's energy.
Dark Winds: Corruptive source studied by the Arcanium in hopes of turning darkness into light.
Black Glints: Dangerous stones tied to the mines, shadows, Velpan shipments, Yore and Gander, and the Arcanium's experiments.
Glister: Addictive substance distributed through Charlie and supplied by the Felricks. The party accepts two portions as evidence and potential bait.
Items and Technology
Ithelion Shard: Sliver of pure living light cut from the Ithelion and carried north by Torin's daughter.
Veyan Obelisk Machines: Black towers built across the Star Sea to fire beams into the Ithelion. Extracting one shard destroys or disables the network.
Gavra Way Gate: Veyan portal inside the great pillar. It rotates among named destinations and can transmit a darkness-extraction beam.
Marquis's Brooch: Token allowing the company to request discreet access to Selendra by claiming to have found her property.
Writs of Passage: Eight documents granting movement into and out of Gavra without ordinary questioning.
Gavran Reward: Eight bags of fifty gold, totaling four hundred gold, paid for the company's work for Selendra.
Purchased Potions: Five basic healing potions, one stronger healing potion, one potion of reduced size, and alchemist's fire acquired from Al Shemist. Exact individual distribution is not fully stated.
Studded-Leather Upgrade: Same-night armor work commissioned for ninety gold, with a forty-five-gold deposit paid.
Nitro's Boom Powder: Small bag of improved explosive powder that must be kept dry and protected from impact.
Spectacticular: Phosphorus firework purchased from Nitro for a visual display.
Glycyrin Bomb: Single powerful explosive purchased from Nitro. Its fuse timing is unknown because Nitro runs until it detonates.

Teller's Erasure: The Vey are disappearing as their enemy's story becomes ingrained in them and is repeated as truth.
Shalyle Route: Way-gate destination used by the priests to receive a beam capable of extracting Ellie's darkness.
Interrupted Purification: Removing Ellie from the beam causes a seizure until her darkness returns, while Bjorn briefly takes her place without lasting extraction.
Black Worm Vision: Torin sees black water, Ephthalas's sealed door, living souls held near death, a bleeding golden tree, and a path through darkness toward restored light.
Souls between Life and Death: Unidentified people said to be alive but cradled in darkness while a maternal voice urges Torin to open the door.

Charlie's Bazaar and Parlor: Hidden glister operation near the wharf district, entered by asking to see the light.
Cathedral of Eth: Father Patches's church, found open amid unrest and marked with pro-Eth graffiti.
Ephthalas: Sacred waterfall formation whose sealed door appears in Torin's Black Worm vision.

Veyan Last Resort: With their people being erased, Valence sacrifices the integrity of the Ithelion to preserve one shard and a final hope.
Torin's Death: Torin's partner murders him immediately after their daughter departs, claiming that his death purchases her safety.
Secret Pillar Rites: Priests have been entering Gavra's supposedly forbidden pillar and presenting people to a darkness-extraction beam without Selendra's declared knowledge.
