Episode 08: The Arcanium | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 08

Episode 08 Glossary

Characters

  • Rue: Recovers memories of his Veyan life, Valence Avorinth, the War of Fangs, and a child he tried to save. He joins a second Crystallic fragment to his own and awakens speaking the name Alokia.

  • Valence Avorinth: The twice-crowned Veyan leader who calls Rue his son and leads the final assault upon Kypheron with a spear blazing like the sun.

  • Alokia: A name that rises from Rue's lost memories after his night at the Raggedy Rat. Rue feels a deep ache attached to it and knows he must find the person it identifies.

  • Brill: A field agent of the Arcanium who intercepts the companions in Gavra, guides them to Phineas Moon, and chooses to continue traveling with them after his ring responds to the Crystallic.

  • Kyle: A dependable, blue-robed Arcanium member assigned as Brill's backup inside the clock tower.

  • Kaphthalda: A senior Arcanium scholar who describes the order's study of metaphysics, light, darkness, prisms, and medicine.

  • Phineas Moon: The Light Bender and leader connected to the Arcanium. He summons the companions east, joins his Crystallic fragment to Rue's, and warns them about the dangers across Tyve.

  • Piccolo: A barrel loader released after eight years of labor in the Shattered Isles. He confirms that black-glint shipments left the mines under Yore and Gander's mark.

  • Clot: A Shattered Isles miner who escapes with a black glint and reaches the party near death. Brill's Juice slows his corruption, and Clot carries the stone to an Arcanium safe house.

  • Lendo Malorian: Zandra's quiet, masked bodyguard. He destroys the black-armored figure following the companions through Gavra, then disappears into the night.

  • Ernan: Beaten while attempting to guard George Felrick. He loses the captive to unknown attackers but rejoins the companions for the journey east.

  • George Felrick: Taken from Ernan by multiple unknown assailants before the party returns to the Blooming Petal.

  • Selendra Cassiandros: Offers the party a skiff if respected citizens vouch for their character and one person agrees to travel with them.

  • Silas Palligref: Remains beside Selendra, recognizes the companions, and supports their inclusion in the expedition despite the threat visible beneath his performance.

Gods and Religion

  • Sethis: The forgotten Veyan goddess of twilight and new beginnings, shown holding both Lunaris and Sarexis. Phineas connects her ancient identity to the deity now worshipped as Eth.

  • Eth: The modern goddess of new beginnings. Phineas claims that this familiar form preserves only part of Sethis's older identity.

  • Sarexian Eclipse: Phineas says he has prayed to the eclipse for years while waiting for the people foretold by the light.

  • Cult of the Iron Chain: Fanatics guarding the sealed Dio Ostium. Phineas warns that every follower will die rather than allow the door to open.

  • Dead and Buried Gods: The party's invocation of Umtheras in an earlier campaign is acknowledged as a permanently expended act of collective will, establishing that such divine appeals cannot be repeated.

Organizations and Societies

  • Arcanium: A secretive order operating from Gavra's clock tower and other hidden locations. Its members study the balance of light and darkness, medicine, metaphysics, and dangerous artifacts.

  • Yore and Gander: The company whose ouroboros marks the barrels Piccolo loaded in the Shattered Isles and the guards Clot narrowly avoids near the wharf.

  • Velpa Trading Company: The power controlling much of the Shattered Isles' labor and shipping system. Its operations remain connected to the mines and returning vessels.

  • Dread Stalkers: Remain at the Blooming Petal with Zandra while the companions follow Brill east.

  • Plague Artists of Slyphus: A western mainland power Phineas associates with a plague made more virulent and terrible.

  • Sorcerers of Keph: Northern blood sorcerers whom Phineas describes as dangerous and untrustworthy.

  • Houses of Tyve: Mainland houses that Phineas believes conceal or protect additional pieces of the Crystallic.

Creatures and Nature

  • Panthex: Phineas Moon's immense bioluminescent companion, resembling a combination of bear and panther.

  • Nana: Vyr's bat companion. Vyr sews a perch inside her cloak so Nana can travel concealed.

  • Cathis: A strange Velkommen animal resembling a rooster that walks upon massive arms. Its prepared body is served as a local delicacy.

  • Triune Bears: Large mountain bears deterred by the smell of burning Vinterweed.

  • Black-Armored Pursuer: A figure that appears human outside the lamplight and armored within shadow. Lendo destroys it, after which both body and armor dissolve back into darkness.

Items and Technology

  • Crystallic Fragments: Rue's fragment and Phineas's fragment snap together without a seam, briefly turning crystalline before returning to metal. The combined artifact remains far from complete.

  • Mechanical Compasses: Rue and Phineas possess nearly identical spheres that open into directional devices. Each points toward a different unseen destination.

  • Eye of the Panthex: A fist-sized sapphire-like gift produced by a Panthex and given to Th'Marck. It can shine in the darkest places.

  • Juice: An Arcanium antitoxin that slows Clot's black-glint corruption but does not cure it.

  • Brill's Ring: A subtle Arcanium signet recognized by Gavra's eastern guard. It also flashes when the Crystallic pieces join.

  • Light Bender's Hat: Phineas's top hat, given to Brill as a possible symbol of the title's continuation.

  • Vinterweed: A spearmint-and-skunk-scented mountain herb that can be burned to deter bears.

  • Fire Root: A Velkommen root that can be steeped into tea to warm travelers in the mountain cold.

  • Tax Ledger: A northern-sector audit paper Whisper steals after the disguised scribe passes him the clock-tower message.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Rue's War of Fangs Memory: Rue remembers protecting Valence Avorinth and the Veyan army as they confront Kypheron within an immense volcanic caldera.

  • Rue's Creation Magic: Rue forms a corporeal duplicate of Whisper's key from light and shadow, demonstrating an exactness that astonishes Phineas.

  • Joining of the Crystallic: Separate fragments attract one another like magnets and restore themselves into a seamless piece capable of activating Sethis's temple.

  • Fading Glints: Phineas believes Tyve's light is weakening in connection with Rue's awakening.

  • Plague of the Soul: Phineas describes the Plague as inner darkness made manifest, consuming a person's light until nothing remains.

  • Threefold Tree: A temple manifestation with silver, natural, and gold-dripping trunks. Its gold pulls Rue into a vision of a Veyan woman being burned from existence by light.

  • Ordos Mirror Survivor: A coda reveals that one person survived the shattering of an Ordos mirror three years earlier and emerged from a bloodlike enclosure while hostile voices spoke through the void.

Locations and Realms

  • Gavra Clock Tower: The concealed Arcanium branch where Brill, Kyle, and Kaphthalda meet the companions.

  • Raggedy Rat: A lower-district Gavran tavern where Piccolo's return is celebrated and Clot brings the party a black glint from the Shattered Isles.

  • Shattered Isles Mines: The collapsed mining complex where workers uncovered a cavern of black stones and guards killed those who saw too much.

  • Triune Mountains, Trident of Gavra: Three mountains east of the city containing Velkommen and the Caverns of Shadow.

  • Velkommen: A welcoming lumber village at the foot of the Triune Mountains whose residents provide food, Vinterweed, and Fire Root.

  • Caverns of Shadow: Hidden caves opened through Brill's ritual phrase and the movement of three concealed stones.

  • Temple of Sethis: An ancient Veyan sanctuary within the Caverns of Shadow. The Crystallic opens its lower chamber beneath a statue of Sethis.

  • Dio Ostium: The Door of God leading toward Tyve's interior, sealed for centuries and guarded by the Cult of the Iron Chain.

  • Dragdah: Phineas's lost homeland, where betrayal sealed his kin alive and left the Forgotten Dead within its halls.

  • Keph and Slyphus: Mainland destinations associated respectively with blood sorcerers and plague artists.

History and Lore

  • War of Fangs: The Vey, led by Valence Avorinth, confront Kypheron in a volcanic battlefield and attempt to end the dragon war with the sun-bright spear.

  • Piccolo's Return: Piccolo survives eight years of labor, rebellion, and fire in the Shattered Isles, proving that release from the colony is possible but extremely rare.

  • Clot's Escape: Clot survives the collapse of the mines, an underground sea, and a tentacled monster before smuggling a black glint back to Gavra.

  • The Light Bender's Warning: Phineas directs the party away from a rushed crossing and identifies several mainland threats, possible sources of knowledge, and routes toward the Crystallic.

  • Sethis and the Vey: The hidden temple demonstrates that Sethis was once central to a people erased from Tyve's remembered history.

  • Lost Crystallic Fragment: A hooded traveler delivers another fragment to a small green goblin beyond a black desert, proving that other pieces remain in distant hands.
