Episode 26: The Gate of Sethis | Roll Seekers | Light of Tyve Campaign, Episode 26

Episode 26 Glossary

Characters

  • Kiera: Young Ilferan shaman rescued from the lost Isle of Ilf. She gives Bjorn her name aboard the Maelstrodomus and remains frightened but relieved to have escaped.

  • Bjorn: Carries a divided soul until Ilk guides him through a dangerous dream and the shattered pearl returns what the Ilferan ritual stole.

  • Dalia: Bjorn's gravely ill niece, seen reaching for him within the Black Worm's dream while he is tested by competing obligations.

  • Dyre Nik'Vosh: Bjorn's brother-in-law, seen saving him from a chained warrior on the battlefield and later urging retreat as the dream collapses around Bjorn.

  • Ilk: Keeper of the Black Worm who restores Bjorn's soul through a dream ritual and warns that Bjorn nearly reached a being called the One.

  • Th'Marck: Long-missing guardian who admits that he fled at Piln but secretly followed the party through Gavra and onto the Maelstrodomus. He transforms into white light and enters Torrin.

  • Queen of Dusk: Hidden woman who directs Torrin to the jungle island and promises memories and power, but says saving his family requires putting out the light.

  • Zandra: Exiled divine figure who loses contact with Azran and the prayers of her followers upon crossing into the Vented Gulf.

  • Silas: Overcomes his fear during the vortex crossing, helps activate the Maelstrodomus's mechanisms, and acknowledges Whisper's role in saving the ship.

  • Valens Avarith: Ancient Veyan king depicted wielding a spear made from a dragon's sacrificed talon.

Gods and Religion

  • Sethis: Goddess honored within the mountain temple. Its murals portray her bringing the knowledge or gift of death to the Vey, being cast out of inner Tyve, and showing her followers how surrendering light protects them from darkness.

  • Queen of Dusk: Divine or ancient identity connected to the island and its forgotten sanctuary, though her precise relationship to Sethis remains unconfirmed.

  • Azran: Power who could previously reach Zandra through the prayers of her believers. That connection ends when the Maelstrodomus enters the Vented Gulf.

  • Ithelion: Light that Torrin still hopes to restore. The Queen of Dusk calls it both a blessing and a curse and challenges whom its restoration would actually save.

  • The Black Worm: Dream-eating entity Ilk uses to lead Bjorn through memories, fears, and spiritual trials until his divided soul reunites.

  • The One: Unidentified being or state that Bjorn approaches within the Black Worm's darkness before awakening.

Organizations and Societies

  • Harbingers of Light: Survive the vortex, enter the Vented Gulf, and explore the Gate of Sethis while the Maelstrodomus undergoes repairs.

  • Dread Stalkers: Pirate crew who keep the damaged Maelstrodomus on course through Galdemol and begin repairing it after the crossing.

  • The Chain: Conquering force represented in Bjorn's dream by armored warriors who bind opponents and command them to submit.

  • The Vey: Ancient people portrayed in Sethis's sanctuary receiving death, worshipping her, and later following her into exile.

Creatures and Nature

  • Galdemol Vortex: Enormous, magically sustained whirlpool roughly two thousand feet across that drags the Maelstrodomus toward its central eye.

  • Vented Gulf Wildlife: Flourishing fish, birds, wing-finned whales, and small flat-tailed marine animals living in the warm, clear waters beyond Galdemol.

  • Island Predators: Large flying reptiles and other unfamiliar creatures inhabiting the jungle island around the Gate of Sethis.

  • Dredged: Creature from the depths discussed after the escape from Ilf. Rue says such beings normally remain below and warns that one reaching the surface is dangerous.

Items and Technology

  • Bjorn's Black Pearl: Vessel holding part of Bjorn's soul. It shatters at the conclusion of Ilk's ritual, leaving its captured energy gone and Bjorn whole again.

  • Maelstrodomus Passage Engine: Four synchronized locks and a central focusing pedestal that channel the ship's stored glints into a single burst capable of crossing Galdemol.

  • Torrin's Pure Glint: Exceptionally clean glint placed into the Maelstrodomus's focusing pedestal. The engine consumes it while launching the ship through the vortex.

  • Transpositional Stone: Rune-marked stone inside a sealed temple chamber. Touching it moves Normandy and Vyr to another location where an old man begs them to reactivate it.

  • Dragon-Talon Spear: Ancient weapon shown in a temple mural, fashioned from a talon willingly removed by a dragon and later carried by Valens Avarith.

  • Th'Marck's Box: Object the guardian was created to protect. Its contents and creator remain unknown even after Th'Marck rejoins Torrin.

Magic and Cosmology

  • Soul Reintegration: Bjorn breaks the pearl within a Black Worm dream and awakens with his missing essence restored, avoiding the danger of remaining divided after death.

  • Maelstrodomus Light Burst: Engine effect that links thousands of glints into the ship, produces explosive white radiance, and hurls the vessel over the vortex.

  • Prayer Severance: Boundary effect inside Tyve that prevents Zandra from receiving Azran's power or hearing the prayers of those who still believe in her.

  • Th'Marck's Light Form: Transformation in which Th'Marck becomes white light and enters Torrin, echoing Rue's ability to shelter as darkness within a shadow.

  • Light Surrender: Rite available in Sethis's sanctuary. Torrin understands that the statue can consume the accumulated light gained through the party's choices, but its result is not yet known.

  • Temple Transposition: Spatial magic bound to the rune stone that carries people between sealed locations and can deactivate before everyone returns.

Locations and Realms

  • Galdemol: Great breakwall and vortex guarding entry to the Vented Gulf. Two immense green-eyed statues control the opening and closing of its passage.

  • Vented Gulf: Warm, turquoise body of water enclosed by Tyve's sheer mountains. Its abundant life contrasts sharply with the lands outside the breakwall.

  • Jungle Island: Small island inside the Vented Gulf containing overgrown ruins and the only immediately visible approach toward the mainland.

  • Gate of Sethis: Ancient mountain temple whose portal arch warns that the way home is shut. Its chambers contain Veyan history, traps, spatial magic, and Sethis's sanctuary.

  • Sethis's Sanctuary: Holy chamber lined with Veyan tapestries where Torrin can surrender his accumulated light to the goddess's statue.

History and Lore

  • Sethis's Return: Temple imagery shows Sethis arriving by boat with darkness behind her and presenting both light and darkness before the Vey.

  • Gift of Death: The Vey appear to worship Sethis for bringing death even though skeletons lie beneath the images, framing mortality as a sacred but terrible gift.

  • Exile of Sethis: Sethis is shown cast out of inner Tyve while a door closes behind her. Her followers are consumed by darkness until they relinquish their light.

  • Dragon's Sacrifice: A dragon surrounded by Ithelion light turns against its own kind and removes a talon that becomes Valens Avarith's spear.

  • Closing of the Way Home: The Gate of Sethis bears an ancient Veyan warning that anyone arriving through it cannot return by the same route.

  • Galdemol's Guardians: Statues of a young woman with a sun scepter and an old woman with a moon scepter lower their weapons to close the vortex, then reopen it after the Maelstrodomus passes.
