Gavron: A senior Knight of Ithelias who begins transferring responsibility to the order's younger members. He appoints a scouting party at Keph and watches for someone capable of eventually carrying his mantle.
Jespin: A short, exceptionally broad knight in heavy plate. He survives the dangerous descent into Keph's reservoir and helps investigate its hidden caverns.
Brindis Sacfis: An older knight who carries Dragon's Milk among the people sheltering beneath Keph. His generosity, music, and conversation begin building trust between the knights and the local population.
Mallkin: A quiet, dark-haired fighter among Keph's scouting knights. She helps explore the reservoir and watches the confrontation with its former prisoner.
Cass: A crossbow specialist and reluctant member of the scouting party. She fires a flaming bolt across the reservoir to reveal the distant island and later attempts to establish an alternate climbing route out of the cavern.
Sir Clint of the East Ward: A hardened knight who joins the expedition beneath Keph and helps manage the group's equipment and escape route.
Tarra Matthews: An exiled Eilinarian who manages logistics for the Knights of Ithelias. She interviews the surviving prisoners, enters the reservoir's hidden tunnel, and becomes an amphibious creature when the silver mirror transfers its curse to her.
Rufus Wimple: The quartermaster of the Knights of Ithelias. He supplies the scouts with rope, climbing gear, weapons, tools, and other provisions for their first mission from Keph.
Travina: One of the eldest surviving Knights of Ithelias and a protective leader within the order. She organizes Keph's repairs and sends the scouts to investigate the reservoir after their failed journey toward Aurorius Falls.
Elos del Mortez: The son of Knight Reverend Calem del Mortez. His authority at Keph is challenged because he did not join the battle that liberated the citadel.
Caleb: A one-eyed knight whose inaccurate distance estimate sends the scouts on an unsuccessful search for nearby water. He is removed from scouting duty and reassigned to other work.
The Cursed Reservoir Dweller: A former human whom the knights nickname Fred. After seeking immortality, he was transformed and cast into Keph's reservoir, where he consumed the dead and guarded the mirror that could transfer his curse to another person.
Snake Eye Joe: Captain of the Dread Stalkers. He leads the search for Zandra through the Lavender Forest and refuses to let the grove distract the crew from rescuing her.
Trash King: A goblin traveler guiding the Dread Stalkers across Tyve. His faith in exploration nearly leads him through the Silver Grove's unknown portal before the pirates convince him to continue after Zandra.
Soupie: A member of the Dread Stalkers who enters the Silver Grove first and later cuts off Finneas's trapped finger to keep the portal from drawing in the rest of him.
Soggy Marion Dan: A pirate who plucks one of the grove's golden apples. The fruit turns to dust and briefly appears to necrode his hand.
Finneas Fuego Fontana: A pirate who tests the green portal by inserting a finger. When he cannot withdraw it, Soupie severs the finger and Finneas fashions a small hook for the wound.
Philip McCoy, Fickle Phil: A member of the Dread Stalkers who joins the search for Zandra and helps the crew examine the Silver Grove.
Old Bloody Gums: An older Dread Stalker who accompanies the search while allowing the younger pirates to approach the grove's dangers first.
Snoop Dolphin: A member of the Dread Stalkers traveling with Snake Eye Joe through the Lavender Forest.
Magda Navaa: The Mother of Mothers and keeper of the Silver Grove. She opens the stone tree, treats Finneas's severed finger, points the pirates west toward Zandra, and observes that light follows the group.
The Tangled One: A sea goddess represented by the coral-covered anchor in Keph's reservoir. The former prisoner claims that she granted his wish for immortality, created his amphibious curse, and can be found upon the sealed island.
Zandra: A young divine figure whose power the pirates believe grows through collective faith. Snake Eye Joe insists that Zandra wants to be rescued and remembered as herself rather than elevated into something greater.
Knights of Ithelias: The diminished knightly order entrusted with Keph after the Harbingers depart. Its members begin training civilians, repairing defenses, investigating the water supply, and preparing for the Chain.
Dread Stalkers: The pirates who followed Zandra into Tyve. Snake Eye Joe's crew searches the Lavender Forest for her and chooses the rescue over the Silver Grove's unknown portal.
Harbingers of Light: The adventurers who liberated Keph and left the Knights of Ithelias responsible for stabilizing the citadel and its surrounding population.
Blood Sorcerers of Keph: The former rulers and prisoners of the citadel. Tarra's interviews suggest that four of the remaining captives may not be infected and may not remember participating in the sorcerers' crimes.
The Chain: The approaching power against which Keph is being fortified. The knights organize signal fires, civilian training, recruitment, and repairs in anticipation of its arrival.
People of Keph: Displaced residents sheltering in the citadel's caves after the Blood Sorcerers' fall. They distrust Keph's water and initially regard the knights as possible replacements for their former tyrants.
Reservoir Serpent: An enormous creature sleeping beneath Keph's underground lake. Its small offspring swim throughout the water, and song can temporarily lull the creature back to sleep.
Amphibious Curse: The fishlike form carried by the reservoir dweller and transferred to Tarra. The body has gills, webbed limbs, difficulty holding weapons, and exceptional mobility in water.
Silver Trees: Four luminous trees growing before the stone willow in Magda Navaa's grove. Their silver leaves hold golden apples that cannot be safely taken by everyone.
Golden Apples: Magical fruit growing within the Silver Grove. An apple chosen by Magda can be held safely, but the one Soggy Marion Dan plucks turns to dust and briefly blackens his hand.
Silver Mirror: A rippling vanity mirror hidden at the end of a narrow tunnel beneath Keph. Looking into it transfers the reservoir dweller's amphibious curse to Tarra and restores his human form. The mirror cracks during the knights' struggle with him.
Tangled One's Anchor: A small coral-covered anchor kept by the cursed man as a reminder of the price he paid for immortality. When the knights lift it from its pedestal, they briefly hear a distant song.
Pulley Platform: A hastily constructed wooden lift used to descend several hundred feet into Keph's reservoir. Its failures nearly kill Jespin and leave the expedition dependent upon an unreliable escape route.
Gavron's Book Pendant: A chained book-shaped pendant representing leadership among the Knights of Ithelias. Gavron intends to pass it to a worthy successor.
Finneas's Hook: A small hook tied to the bandaged remains of Finneas's finger after Soupie severs it from the portal.
Curse Transfer: The silver mirror preserves one victim's immortality by passing the amphibious transformation to another person who meets its gaze. Tarra's transformation frees the previous bearer rather than ending the curse.
Serpent Lullaby: Song reverberating through Keph's reservoir can calm the enormous serpent. Tarra's improvised singing keeps it asleep while she crosses to the island.
Silver Grove Portal: A green and white gateway opened by Magda Navaa within the stone willow. It leads unimaginably far from the Lavender Forest and prevents anything entering it from being easily withdrawn.
Light Following the Pirates: Magda senses that the light moves with Snake Eye Joe's crew despite their foreign origin and lack of conventional divine magic.
Keph: The luminous Veyan citadel liberated from the Blood Sorcerers. The Knights of Ithelias are repairing it, gathering civilians, and attempting to turn it into a defensible home before the Chain arrives.
Keph Reservoir: A vast black lake several hundred feet beneath the citadel. It contains the serpent, the cursed prisoner, a hidden mirror, and an island sealed by unknown runes.
Reservoir Island: A smooth black mound in the center of Keph's underground lake. Tarra finds a circular runic doorway there but cannot open or interpret it.
Aurorius Falls: A distant waterfall deep within the Sheer Peaks. The knights initially believe it may provide Keph with clean water, but discover that reaching it would take far longer than their scout reported.
Sheer Peaks: The immense, layered mountains west of Keph. Their spear-like ridges conceal Aurorius Falls and have never been successfully crossed.
Lavender Forest: The dark woodland through which the Dread Stalkers travel while searching for Zandra. Trash King leads the crew south to avoid the more dangerous central lands.
Silver Grove: A magical clearing tended by Magda Navaa. It contains silver trees, golden apples, and a stone willow capable of opening a portal to a distant place.
Stewardship of Keph: After the Harbingers depart, the Knights of Ithelias assume responsibility for the newly liberated citadel and begin rebuilding both its defenses and its relationship with the surrounding people.
Curse Beneath Keph: A former resident sought immortality from the Tangled One, became an amphibious creature, and was thrown into the reservoir with the bodies of his loved ones. His freedom requires another person to inherit the curse.
Search for Zandra: The Dread Stalkers continue pursuing their kidnapped leader across Tyve. Their choice to reject the Silver Grove's portal preserves their westward course but leaves the gateway's destination unknown.
