Auresian spiritual life is defined by the tension between the State Church and the Ancient Ways. While the marble temples of the cities belong to the Mother, the shadows of the forests and the hearts of the rural folk often still belong to the Old Gods.

I. The Two Faiths

The Church of Clerasy (State Religion)

  • Primary Deity: Clērātas (The Divine Mother)

  • Focus: Order, Law, Civilization, and Protection.

  • Devotion: Every Auresian home, from the lowliest apartment to the grandest villa, maintains a bedside shrine to Clērātas. She is the guardian of the hearth and the source of the Emperor's mandate.

The Wilthen Scianth (The Old Ways)

  • Focus: Nature, Fate, War, and the Primal Elements.

  • Status: Viewed by the Church as "primitive" or "heretical," yet deeply rooted in the Auresian countryside. These are the pre-Clerasy gods who represent the raw forces of the world.

II. The Hierarchy of Clerasy

The Church of Clerasy is a mirrored reflection of Auresia's imperial discipline. It is a "State within a State."

  • The High Cleric: The supreme voice of Clērātas on earth, based in the capital.

  • Metropolitan Priests: High-ranking officials who manage the sprawling temples of Auresia’s major cities.

  • Regional Appointments: The Church operates on a strict chain of command; the High Cleric appoints regional leaders, who in turn appoint local priests for smaller towns.

The Shadow of the Clerical Age

In the smaller, more isolated settlements, the civil governors (Praelics) are often secondary to the local priest. This is a remnant of the Clerical Age, when the Church held absolute power. Even now, a priest can stir a mob or halt a decree by threatening the Primordial Chaos—the terrifying eternity of unmaking that awaits those who defy the Mother's chosen.

III. Religious Dissent & Survival

While Auresia is a central power that projects an image of unity, its religious landscape is far from uniform.

  • The Rural Resistance: In the hinterlands and isolated valleys, the Wilthen Scianth remains the dominant force. Farmers may pay lip service to Clērātas in the marketplace, but they leave offerings for Dagan or Firguni in the fields.

  • The Cult of Wilthen: In places like the Montelan borders or Sarfinian highlands, entire sects have formed that blend Auresian discipline with the wilder rites of the Old Gods. These practitioners are often wary of outsiders, hiding their "Withic" shrines from the prying eyes of the Church's inquisitors.
