The Battle of the Swordbridge marked the brutal and final end to Norionor Whiteshield’s March of the Lion and Lothen’s dream of dominion over the Mainland.
On the 12th of November 1003 AC, beneath a sky raining liquid fire from the phenomenon known as “The Tears”, King Norionor—whom many Lothenians still hail as the greatest ruler since Vheod Whiteshield—faced a lone champion called the Element in single combat atop the ancient stone bridge linking Rose and Mooncry.
Little is known of the Element. Some say he was a living spell given elven form, forged in secret by powerful guilds and hidden sorcerers desperate to halt Lothen’s relentless conquest. Others claim he was something older—balance made flesh.
What is certain is this: the duel was short, merciless, and final.
The Element slew Norionor Whiteshield and vanished forever from Vitallia. The king’s body lay broken on the bridge, burned by the fiery rain until only ash-cloaked bones remained. With his death, Lothen’s armies faltered, their conquests crumbled, and the lands won during the March of the Lion slipped from their grasp.
The bard Istilian Veriam immortalized the imagined final exchange in his famous poem “Words of Fire”, verses still sung in taverns from Rose to the northern wastes.
What kind of rain is this?
They call it “The Tears”. It is the dust of the Meteor that returns to the earth as liquid fire.
You are the Element. We finally meet. I am tired of hearing about you. What kind of name is that?
It is not a name; it is a force.
What type of force?
A force of balance.
And you are going to restore balance? By killing me?
Yes.
And what are you going to do after? Are you going to fight the Black Knight alone?
No.
Are you a Maor Elf? From some warren within the earth?
I am not, but I bear this form.
I met an elf, a beautiful lady with blue hair.
I know. She tried to save you.
I explained to her that I do not need saving. I promised her a winter flower from the north.
You shall not deliver. The March of the Lion ends today.
Whatever magic you possess, Element, it cannot kill me. There is not a spell known to mankind that affects me.
I do not possess magic. I am magic. I am the end of your line.
