Imperium Alvanum Aeternum (Eternal Elven Empire), known simply as the Imperium Aeternum or Aeteria, is a nation of elves in the Aeterian Islands within Aurza's Chalice. The Imperium is the oldest surviving country on Abmarah, having existed in some form or another since 700 BR, nearly three thousand years ago.
At the center of island flies the magnificent floating capital city, Alsorion. Here stands the grand cathedral known as the Holy Court, where the Pontiff Aeternum, the highest spiritual leader of Aeterism, resides.
The Pontiff is considered to be Jakuna's emissary to the world, to serve as a contact between the mortals and the gods, through whom the divine knowledge flows. The Pontiff is elected for life through a sacred process known as the Holy Judication. Representatives from elven noble houses, revered scholars, and esteemed priests gather to choose the most spiritually attuned elf among them, usually one of the archiepiscopus (archbishops) who were chosen by the previous Pontiff. The chosen then gives up their original name to take on a new divinely selected name.
