The Weave is an energy field of raw magic, generated by all living beings from whales down to algae, that can be accessed, tapped into, and used by casters of Magic. Any living being has the capability to learn how to manipulate the weave. It flows throughout the cosmos, touching almost every corner of existence, with the exception of dead-magic zones. It runs through the universe in unseen threads, a cosmic fabric from which magic is drawn.

There are two distinct methods by which one draws magic from the Weave, often called Divine Magic & Arcane Magic. Divine Magic is channeled through the lens of gods, prayers, oaths, ideas, belief, and nature. Divine casters such as Clerics, Paladins, Druids, and Rangers tend to not tap into the weave directly, instead channeling magic through one of these lenses. Arcane Magic on the other hand constitutes of all other kinds of magic, generally categorized together by the fact that they manipulate the weave directly without any intermediary. This means that Gods themselves are actually Arcane casters instead of Divine casters, since they tap into the weave directly and serve as lenses for Divine casters to use magic through them.

Varkanus, the god of Magic and Life, is the one who maintains the weave. Magic and Life are not two separate domains though they may appear as such, since the Weave comes from life. It is stronger and more potent on green worlds such as Abmarah, more powerful still in worlds even more abundant with life such as the Feywild, and lackluster but still present in dead corners of Voidspace. The raw magic of the weave is often called Wild Magic, but that is wrong. Wild Magic occurs when the weave is damaged or distorted.

It is undoubtedly true that magic comes from life and the abundance of it. Spellcasters who have lost limbs have reported their spells to be slightly but noticeably weaker. Living constructs such as the Warforged are able to become highly skilled spellcasters despite lacking organic life within them, but there is a noticeable lack of power in their spellcasting as compared to a similarly-skilled humanoid. On a green world like Abmarah, these innate capabilities of harnessing the weave are almost overridden by the strength of Abmarah's life and leylines, and the differences between a humanoid and a construct's spellcasting are reduced to almost non-existence. However, on a dead world such as the first moon, these innate differences would be more profound and highlighted. This is why Blood is so important in the religion of Varkanus, it is what gives all animals and humanoids their life. Due to the connection of blood and magic, blood sacrifices are that much more potent.
