Km'mala Peaks

The Km'mala Peaks (कामाला पर्वत शृंखला or ꯀꯃꯥꯂꯥ ꯆꯤꯡꯁꯥꯡ) are a large arid mountain range stretching from the northern tip of Eqos all the way down to its southern tip. The mountains divide the continent into two halves, the larger Eastern Eqos and the smaller Western Eqos containing the Goldheim Rainforest. The mountains also act as a rain shield, creating the rainforest on the western side and the two deserts on the eastern side. There are also many volcanoes within the range due to how geologically active the peaks are. The Km’mala Peaks are the third longest mountain range in the world after the Lueni Range of Eteru and the Kosmosi Mountains of Aurial, but are not nearly as highly elevated as them. The tallest mountain in the Km’mala Peaks is the volcano Yobara at 6,600 meters. While many of these taller peaks in the range can have snow cover permanently, the Km’mala Peaks as a whole lack permanent snow and ice and only see snow in the winter seasons. The volcanic rocks of the range give the mountains a distinctly darker look, making them appear dark brown or black. Although most peaks within the range are classified as arid, the climate of the Km’mala Peaks changes drastically depending on where you are. Most people divide the range into three distinct zones: The mostly arid Northern Km’mala that we focus on in this book, the forested and moist Southwest Km’mala, and the highly volcanic Southeast Km’mala. The range is populated by a variety of species, with dragonborn being the most common. They are further culturally divided between the southern yoldran-dragonborn who have a more tibetan-inspired culture and the northern koorjei-dragonborn who have a manipuri-inspired culture. There are only a few “easy” passages through the mountains, creating trade routes for caravans that don’t prefer to sail around the continent entirely.

The Northern Km’mala are the dividing border between the Vurmark Raj, the Kasaaqi Hukumat, and al-Shhubus. They are mostly arid with few volcanoes, but there are a few fertile valleys with streams and lakes that have a more moist and temperate climate to them, including the valley in which the city of Koorjing is located called the Koorjei Valley (ꯀꯨꯔꯖꯩ ꯇꯝꯄꯥꯛ), with its primary water source being Lake Maglok (ꯃꯥꯒꯂꯣꯛ ꯄꯥꯠ). Its southern twin the Kenal Valley (ꯀꯦꯅꯥꯜ ꯇꯝꯄꯥꯛ) housed the destroyed city of Keningjei and was also once as fertile as the Koorjei Valley, but much of it was seared during the War of Km’mala in the early third era. The valley has recovered slowly into a grassland by the modern day thanks to its own water source, Lake Mawlok (ꯃꯥꯋꯂꯣꯛ ꯄꯥꯠ). These twin valleys are the only temperate regions north of the Rethi River, as even the oases aren’t as cool.

The Southwest Km’mala, also sometimes known as Central Km’mala is a lot less arid than the rest of the range. It is heavily forested as it transitions into the Goldheim Rainforest, and includes the famous purple forests of the Yoldran Valley. Most of this region is controlled by the Kingdom of Yoldra, a dragonborn kingdom centered on the city of Yoldra at the base of Mt. Yobara. It is now a part of the Calamity Covenant. The Southeast Km’mala is a lot more arid, as well as being heavily volcanic. While the Km’mala Peaks do have large volcanoes in the other zones, the Southeast Km’mala is known primarily for its volcanoes including the Five Brothers of the Ashen Vyzum Wastes. It is known to contain a primordial gate to the elemental plane of fire, guarded by the Kingdom of Yoldra.
