Tefniki (तेफ्निकी) is a town within the Kav’orra Desert, just southwest of Absorya Parbat and Ammba. It is in the middle of Ammba and Dibayad, and has seen an explosive growth in the past few decades due to the new train line between the cities going through Tefniki. It is the largest of the mid-desert towns and villages within the Kav’orra. This ancient settlement is actually built inside a depression in the desert around a primordial quarry that the giants of Namhet once used. The negative elevation of the town is also very useful in terrace-based desert agriculture as well as rainwater collection over time. Tefniki thus feels like an inverted pyramid within the dunes. While it has been inhabited for thousands of years, Tefniki was always a small mining village until its growth over the past three decades due to the construction and completion of the steam rail project that finally connected Dibayad and Ammba.
The quarry of Tefniki became useful not just for raw materials but to also serve as an important mid-stop between the cities, as more and more people started immigrating to the town for work. In 3E251, a branch of House Kawar were made the rulers of the growing town of Tefniki and became the cadet house Kayari. As close relatives of the Ranas of Ammba, the Thakurs of House Kayari have stayed politically aligned to the mountain for the entirety of their rule to the present day. Despite the town’s relative closeness to Dibayad, the Shahs and Rajas of Dibayad have had little to no impact on the politics of Tefniki. The city’s impact on the town has been increasing due to the influence of the train connection, but the dwarven majority of Tefniki is still aligned to Ammba.
The Great Quarry of Tefniki was created by giants in the primordial era, a quarry-mine that dug out stone from under the sands of the desert. It is fairly deep, tapping into the groundwater hidden far beneath the sands. The quarry seems to have magical enchantments that prevent the buildup of sand within it, seemingly resistant to being buried by the desert unlike most other settlements of the giants. The quarry was resettled by desert-dwarves in the early first era, who resumed the mining operations and used the magical shielding of the quarry to their advantage. They started to use the groundwater to create pipe networks that irrigated their terrace farms, making the quarry a rare oasis within the desert not dissimilar to Malagarh.
Tefniki has a large presence of the Kasaaqi Sena in the modern day as the protection of the train line is of the utmost importance especially due to encroaching raiders and tribes such as the Sand Chasers who do not want the train lines to be built. The increased military fortifications in Tefniki are also seen as a political move by House Kawar to increase their defenses against the city of Dibayad who have often been their enemies. The increased immigration and population growth of Tefniki have also brought in crime and smuggling rings taking advantage of the new transport opportunities that trains provide.
