Haanari (हानारि) are beastborn humanoids based loosely on the Loxodon from Ravnica. A serene species, haanari originated in Eqos and are one of the most long-lived species matching elves with their lifespans of up to 400 years and much like them have a smaller population as compared to other humanoids. The haanari tower over almost all other species, with wide and powerful builds. They have elephant-like heads with large ears, tusks, and a prehensile trunk. They have dry, wrinkly skin that ranges in tones from grays to blacks, with the exception of the mammori lineage whose skins are covered with brown fur. Their hands have four digits, and their feet are flat hoof-like ovals with four toenails. They are found primarily in their homeland of the Edeni Expanse, with small populations spreading across Abmarah. They only have two lineages, with the vast majority of haanari being the elephant-like tembosi. The other less numerous lineage are the mammoth-like mammori who settled in the icy northern continent of Skion. Like elephants, the haanari have close-knit family groups despite their smaller population. These clans are generally led by an elder matriarch, and this social structure makes them somewhat insular. While haanari work with and enjoy the friendship of other species, it’s very rare for a haanari to form familial relationships with non-haanari. This does translate into them having unwavering conviction for whatever factions and organizations they join.
Haanari treat their workplaces and guilds like clans, and believe in taking care of all other members. Despite the haanari not wanting to form true families with other species, they are quick to call coworkers and comrades as “family” and treat them as such. Similarly, haanari mothers tend to watch everyone’s kids regardless of blood relation, be it other haanari children or even the children of other species.
Spirituality is a virtue among the haanari, and their elders are seen as spiritual leaders in their homelands even by other species. While most edeni haanari worship the primordial spirits of their ancient Ahbara religion, aeterian haanari often become priests and clerics as well, especially in Ashtadharma. While they have a reputation for calmness, empathy, and serenity, the haanari can be incredibly dangerous foes and many of them are known for their wartime prowess. Armored haanari warriors are feared tanks on the battlefield, especially when supported by haanari druids or clerics. Their long lifespan makes haanari mature very slowly and show little signs of age. Haanari gestate for almost 2 years, the longest of all the species. Children reach adulthood by the age of 30, and can then live up to four or five centuries. The haanari also have great photographic memories, rarely forgetting anything of note. Some elders can recite entire epics and histories from memory alone, but like anything else this is a practiced skill that can be lost by haanari who do not maintain it. This incredible memory combined with their serene attitudes mean that groups of haanari can take an especially long time to decide things, whether that be political policies or even what to eat. Debates can last for days in their culture, frustrating others.
When creating a Haanari, you have to pick one of the two lineages. All lineages share the following traits:
Ability Score Increase. Choose any +2; choose any other +1
Age. Haanari both gestate and mature slowly, reaching adulthood by the age of 30. They can then live to be up to 400 years old.
Alignment. Haanari lean towards lawful alignments.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Size. Haanari are typically over 7-8 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Haanari Serenity. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.
Apex Build. You have advantage on Strength-based ability checks and Strength saving throws. In addition, you count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Natural Armor. You have thick, leathery skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield's benefits as usual.
Trunk. You can grasp things with your trunk, and you can use it as a snorkel. It counts as an additional arm and can perform any actions you can use your other arms to perform with the following exceptions:
You can use your trunk to wield a weapon that has the light property, but you can't use it to wield other kinds of weapons.
You can't wield a shield with your trunk.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
Haanari Lineage. You are part of a lineage that grants you additional abilities. Choose a lineage from the Haanari Lineages table. You gain the features of the chosen lineage.
Lineage | Feature |
|---|---|
Tembosi | Magic of the Savannah. You can cast the Druidcraft and Detect Magic spells with this trait. When you use this version of detect magic, you can't cast that spell again until you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast it using any spell slots you have. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for the Spells you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select the species). |
Mammori | Woolly Skin. You are accustomed to living in harsh arctic conditions, and are resistant to the effects of extreme cold. You gain Resistance to Cold damage. In addition, you have Advantage on Constitution saving throws made to avoid exhaustion as a result of extreme cold. |

The Tembosi are visually similar to african and asian elephants, and make up for more than 95% of all haanari. They are found primarily within the Edeni Expanse, especially around the heartlands of Jamre. The tembosi are seen as both spiritual and political leaders in the Edeni, with the most powerful clan being the Temokwo Family of Jamre. In the Kav’orra, tembosi are generally only found within the Rethi Riverbank and in cities like Kasaaq or Dibayad. A minority species within the Hukumat, there are no tembosi noble families native to the region. That being said, many tembosi merchants and warriors find high positions of power within the Hukumat and hold political sway. The tembosi have a unique relationship with actual elephants, and tamers connect spiritually with their elephant mounts creating a relationship for life. Tembosi elephant-cavalry are some of the most feared forces.

The Mammori are visually similar to woolly mammoths, and are found primarily in the northern continent of Skion. Some populations also migrated to other icy regions such as Teer and northern Aurial. The mammori have longer tusks and are covered in thick brown-black fur, an adaptation the lineage developed to resist the biting cold of their newfound homeland. It is believed that the mammori descend from the tembosi. They are behemoths, averaging taller than other haanari to match the half-giants of Skion. Extremely few mammori are ever spotted in Eqos, as the heat of the continent does not suit them well. That being said, the occasional mammori makes the pilgrimage back to their ancestral homelands within the Edeni Expanse, to connect with their ancestor spirits.
In addition, Haanari players have access to unique Species Feats that they can choose to take in addition to other General Feats. Species Origin Feats can be chosen during character creation replacing any Origin Feat you would’ve received from your background.
State of Serenity (Species Origin Feat). You remain calm even in the midst of battle, reading your opponents well. You can take the Dodge action as a bonus action. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Thick Hide (Species Feat). You know how to use your leathery skin to your advantage. As a bonus action, you gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage for 1 minute. Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you complete a short rest.
